CBA, Augustana is a wonderful school. My daughter and I also liked the area it is in. Academically, it has so much to offer --- congratulations.

Bookworm, S#2 loves his humanities, and writing, and is mostly interested in theoretical rather than applied math & science.

Donemom, you're absolutely right. I didn't mean to imply that the "stats" including the SAT were factors in winning the awards. It was primarily based on grades, subjects and classes completed, interest, and communicating his enthusiasm for math and science to his fellow students. Sorry if I misled anyone (I was just being lazy copy & paste).

CBA321: Congratulations! This is a wonderful accomplishment.

My son wasn't awarded the RPI medal by his high school, but was offered more than the medal amount by RPI. If your child is interested in RPI I suggest you let your counselor know so they can consider him/her for the award.

Over30: great point!..a couple of year ago, for some reason, they didn't award the medal at our school. There was a top student who had considerable financial constraints, and when his parents heard about the medal/scholarship from a previous winner, they let the school know of his interest in RPI. Well, the faculty did then give him the award, and I believe he did end up attending.

over30, my S just submitted his application to RPI. They sent him their 'shorter' application, indicating some interest on their part. We visited in October. I'm sure hoping for some merit $$. Any words of advice? (He had a 1430 / 2120 on his SATs, GPA is about 3.5 and rising, decent ECs...tennis / cello / church / camp counselor / etc.)

Apple, sorry, no specific advice. I don't remember if he had to apply for the scholarship separately. We had visited and he really liked the school. I think they do offer $ to good students, and it looks like your son has a good shot. Good luck to him.

Univeristy of Pittsburgh
$20,784 (full OOS tuition)
94.8 UW 9th-11th grade
2070 (730V/710M/630W)
I think it was just an academic merit award.
(I was one of three guys from my school to get full tuition scholarships from Pitt.)

somebodynew,

Way to go!! Very happy news, and Happy New Year!

somebodynew good for you!!!!! What an honor. Congratulations.

Yes, Baush and Lomb awards are nominated by your high school and have to do with achievement in math and science. My D was awarded this as well at the end of junior year in HS, though did not choose to apply to the college. However, it is a recognized award amongst colleges.

Wyogal, Over30, somebodynew -

I haven't skimmed this thread in a while, but I'm glad to see so many positive results. Wyogal - Your second sound sounds a bit like mine in terms of interests and leanings.

And good luck to your son with RPI, Apple17!

apple,
call your son's GC and ask if the HS offers the Rensealler medal. This is a medal given by some HS's for acheivement in the sciences. In my son's hs, they try to present it to a student who is excellent and interested in attending RPI - carries a big ol' scholarship. I haven't a clue if your son's hs offers it, or if it was already presented - but a subtle inquiry would not be out of line. In fact, asking the GC if he or she knows of a list of local scholarships would hurt, either. Sometimes guidance does this and it never makes it out of the backpack onto the kitchen table.

ohio_mom, i think the Rennselear medal is done for an outstanding junior. My understanding is that Guidance and/or the math dept. choose a student and regardless of whether the student is interested, that's who it goes to. I haven't asked who the recipient was (I know that on the RPI site they list our HS as one that they do this program at) I imagine it's one of the kids that's applying to MIT or UPenn.

They won't switch itto another student, will they?

Our Guidance office has a book of scholarships in their office that students can access. However, trying to get a student to sit down and go through this book is difficult. I think it will need to be one of those parent / child moments...

I believe that the hs has some latitude in the award. Discussing it with the GC won't help your son, but it might help someone down the road... I am a great believer in proactive karma.

"However, trying to get a student to sit down and go through this book is difficult. I think it will need to be one of those parent / child moments..."

Ah, bonding.

Ohio_mom, is your S/D going to RPI? Seems I saw your name on the CWRU board as well. Do you have any thoughts on the relative merits of these two schools? We've visited both, my S really liked the feel of Case. We know a lot of people from Case, but it was interesting that Case didn't come across as selective as RPI. Since RPI was about the millionth college we visited, we did the info session, hung around and talked to the admissions office and walked / drove campus ourselves. (We've seen enough dorm rooms, and frankly, the dorm rooms, cafeterias and gyms are not factoring into the decision).

I think by the end of this, we will have bonded so well I'll be glad to see him go...

U of San Diego has offered my D $15000 year for four years as a Trustee Scholar. She also was offered $5000 a year at Franciscan Univ in Steubenville. Her stats: 2070 SAT, 30ACT, 4.36w/4.0 uw gpa.
It's great to hear of all these kids being rewarded for all their hard work and study!

maryc - congratulations! Is that $15K total over 4 years? Or $15K/year renewable?

The award is $60,000 total. We are excited! But D is still dreaming of Notre Dame.

Congratulations to your daughter MaryC --- keeping my fingers crossed for Notre Dame, but it's nice to have such a great school as USD as a backup!

My niece was just awarded $16K a year by Drexel, with the chance to interview/apply for a larger award. I think Penn State and Pitt are still ahead of Drexel on her list, but this type of award can make the private school cost less than the state schools.
