<p>Has she been accepted to the double degree program at Peabody/Hopkins? It is possible to be admitted by both schools independently, and still not be accepted to the joint program. The numbers involved are a rather small percentage of the total conservatory students, compared with Oberlin where nearly a third of the conservatory students are in the double degree program.</p>

<p>The overall feel of the two are quite different, particularly Oberlin College vs. Hopkins. (The two conservatories have a bit more in common.) Logistics are a bit easier at Oberlin because everything is within a 10-minute walk. There is a fairly frequent shuttle between Peabody and the Homewood campus, but she would have to get used to factoring the shuttle schedule into her routine.</p>

<p>Peabody has the advantages and disadvantages of being in a city - lots of things to do outside the college within an easy walk or cab ride. The neighborhood around Peabody is pretty nice, but the areas around the Homewood campus can be a bit dicey. The JHU hospital is in a still worse section of town.</p>

<p>There are lots of things going on in the college and conservatory at Oberlin, but not a whole lot else to do unless you have a car or make friends with someone who has one. There is a bus that goes to Cleveland a few times a day, but the last one back to Oberlin leaves Cleveland not much after 7 PM. From what I have seen, that is of little consequence because Cleveland is fairly dead at night anyway. If you need more than the same 3000 or so people in your life, Oberlin can start feeling a bit small.</p>

<p>The main concerns should probably be the primary music teachers she would have at each school and the relative strength of the department in which she will be pursuing the other major.</p>

<p>Re: Eastman, the admissions director and the teacher left messages on our machine to tell our D she was accepted before the letter came. As for the FAFSA EFC, Eastman "met" our EFC largely with loans.</p>

<p>guitargirl, what did your D play for her audition at USC? They have an amazing faculty, and if I'm not mistaken Pepe Romero is the head of the guitar department; I wouldn't pass up an opportunity to study with him.</p>

<p>wdc - we are in Washington State and are also awaiting Peabody news (strings). A friend whose daughter also applied called Peabody yesterday and she was told 95% of the letters went out and if she didn't get anything by the end of the week, to call back.</p>

<p>Seahills: My wife (soprano) just received her acceptance and scholarship to Peabody this afternoon (this will be her 2nd bachelor's, so she's considered a transfer). We're in Washington, D.C., and assume that they sent them out yesterday. A friend of ours (organ) got his acceptance yesterday.</p>

<p>A special hello: we're from Seattle too (my wife's from Mt. Vernon; she sang at St. James on First Hill) and moved out here for me to go to law school. Best of luck with everything. Let us know if we can be of any help.</p>

<p>blondeviolin89 (you could be my daughter - who is blond, a violinist, and born in '89!) - no it's not weird at all. It's a perfect example of why music school admissions can't be divided so easily into reach, match, and safeties! You may have played better at one, or had a style or sound that one school preferred over the other, or there were more openings, or the kid that beat you out didn't apply to the other school, or.... you get the idea! Anyway, congratulations! You had an impressive showing all around.</p>

<p>Thumper, congrats on grad school. Where in NC is the school? We just drove through NC today, on our way back from DC for spring break.</p>

<p>My D is still undecided about schools. I think she prefers Furman, but it has turned out to be one of the more expensive, after all the cards are on the table. Miami is the cheapest. I hate this part of the process.</p>

<p>North Carolina School of the Arts is in Winston-Salem, NC. <a href="http://www.ncarts.edu/%5B/url%5D"&gt;http://www.ncarts.edu/&lt;/a> It is part of the UNC system, offers degrees at undergraduate and graduate levels, and it also serves as the magnet school for the arts in NC. In-state high school students who gain admission (musicians compete against undergraduate and graduate students for studio slots) are given free room, board, and tuition. (Out of state and international high school students can audition and attend, but they pay costs equal to out of state college tuition, etc.) Numerous graduates go to the major conservatories every year. It is a terrific school with an outstanding reputation.</p>
