Master List of Music School Final Decisions, Fall 2013

WOW! Go Blue!

I have a question maybe someone knows a definitive answer to. My daughter was accepted to Belmont University and accepted admission for this fall. Because of this, she withdrew all of her other offers. But when she called to decline Berklee College of Music, they recommended she defer her admission to Berklee for up to a year, so that if things didn’t work out, she would still have her acceptance and scholarship money. It hadn’t even occurred to me that that would be a choice. Berklee says they have no problem with her deferring for a year, and going to another college, but I want to be sure she legally can as far as Belmont is concerned. Does anyone know for sure that this can be done?

I don’t see why not. Your daughter is not committing to attend Berklee next year, only extending the possibility of attending. But you could also ask Belmont.

There are NASM regulations about scholarships, transferring, etc. She should ask Belmont before she agrees to anything about Berklee, even if it is just to suspend her admission.

Congratulations to Nonmusiciandad and daughters.

Congratulations also to petteck and daughter, on daughter’s decision to attend Indiana University, as noted in another thread.

Although this discussion probably belongs on another thread, I am curious to know the answer.

I believe lorelei is referring to the Code of Ethics in the NASM Handbook, particularly Articles II through IV which can be found starting on p. 19 at http://nasm.arts-accredit.org/site/docs/Handbook/NASM_HANDBOOK_2012-13.pdf</a> with section 3 of Article IV being of particular interest. While Belmont is indeed an NASM member, I do not see Berklee on the list.

Schools that are also NACAC members have a Statement of Principles of Good Practice available at http://www.nacacnet.org/about/Governance/Policies/Documents/SPGP.pdf</a> that has some language that would apply to this situation. Both Belmont and Berklee are NACAC members. A quote from the NACAC document:

"Postsecondary members agree that they will not

  • knowingly recruit students who are enrolled, registered, have initiated deferred admission, or have declared their intent, or submitted contractual deposits to other
institutions unless the students initiate inquiries themselves or unless cooperation is sought from institutions that provide transfer programs.
  • knowingly offer financial aid packages to students who are committed to attend other institutions, unless the students initiate such inquiries. "

I suppose reasonable people might disagree on what constitutes recruitment.

Hi all…my D decided to attend Illinois Wesleyan University - BM Vocal performance. Thanks again to everyone for the great advice, questions, and direction. So very helpful to know others in the same situation!

Congratulations SingerMomOR and daughter.

So, could we say that since the scholarship offer was already on the table when ticcr2’s daughter accepted Belmont that she was not being offered anything and was also not being recruited by Berkeley. Instead Berkeley rep was just clarifying the student’s rights? Hmmm

After an insane amount of deliberation, won over by the teacher she clicked with above everyone else, my daughter has decided to attend Vanderbilt University (BM violin performance).

D will be attending Indiana University - Jacobs School of Music, majoring in vocal music education. She made up her mind as soon as she was accepted, but we waited until yesterday to commit.

Daughter will be attending the Cleveland Institute Of Music - BM Viola.

Congratulations to ismerp and daughter, on daughter’s decision to attend UCLA, as noted on another thread.

Congratulations to violin1942 and daughter, on daughter’s decision to attend Cleveland Institute of Music, as noted on another thread.

Congratulations to blaidontknow, for a decision to transfer to Belmont for a program in Music Business, as noted on another thread.

My son has decided to accept a great offer at CU Boulder for a MM Vocal Performance. It came to his attention kind of unexpectedly, and he loved what he saw! So Colorado it is! Congratulations to everybody for their accomplishments.

I decided to do a BA in Music at UChicago. It’s a more uniquely intellectual undergrad experience than I could get from a dual-degree program.

SimpleLife, congratulations to your son! It is a really great school. Does he know whom he’ll be studying with? I wonder if I met him when I auditioned out there in January…

Our S has accepted an unbelievably amazing scholarship from The Peabody Conservatory. He will be studying towards a BM in oboe performance. We are thrilled!
