Master of Fine Arts (MFA)

Hi -- I just read about the biologist who wants to get into architectural engineering, so I thought I'd ask about my new career idea.

I have been writing and editing for ten years without any formal credentials. (I have bachelors and master's degrees, but in other fields). Now, with an empty nest looming, I am thinking of taking some MFA courses, to learn to be a better editor/writer and also to become qualified to teach.

Does anyone on this forum have any experience with MFA degrees or programs? What jobs have you seen the MFA lead to? I am restricted to one of two MFA programs in my metropolitan area.

Thanks.

Might get better response in the Art Major Forum...

Where is that? Oh, and it's a Master of Fine Arts in Writing, so perhaps a writer's forum? Your help in locating is appreciated.

You can find the arts forum under College Majors. There is a lot of information on visual art programs, but there are occasional posts about writing.

we who have the degree like to call it terminal.

In writing you can teach at a college level but it is mostly part time classes with no benefits.

you can also get the degree and then do alternative route to teach in public schools
I have an MFA in painting from Bard College-I do still paint and I have a steady job of waitressing to supplement income

Warren-Wilson in North Carolina has an MFA program that might interest you. It looks like they have a 10 day intensive residency followed by an off-campus mentoring program. It appears to take place each January and July.
