So, I need to start applying for graduate schools this upcoming fall but I am absolutely freaking out because my GPA is low for grad school. I have some space to retake classes but I still have to apply soon. I want to eventually get a doctorate, but I’ve decided to start looking at only master’s programs (and eventually try for doctoral programs).
My question basically is, what are some decent programs for my low GPA? Should I even bother applying? WHAT SHOULD I DO
I would not consider graduate school at this time. Take some time to work and reflect on what you might do better when you do return to school.
Depends a lot of what type of degree you are seeking. Psych, you say? Clinical? Social? School? Is your plan to get a terminal Master’s and then enter a PhD program? (You may need to start over). Clinical psych PhD programs are extremely competitive.
You need to get a good understanding of what types of psych degrees are on a path towards a license to practice, if that’s is what you want. Without a license, you cannot bill insurance. Be careful here. There are few paths which are licensable without a PhD, and it must be the right kind of PhD. Licenses are regulated by each state government.
Most large cities have a state school or two which produce local allied health professional in psych (counseling psych, school psych). They usually do not have tough admission requirements.
Well, you don’t NEED to start applying for graduate school this fall. There’s nothing written saying you have to go to grad school right out of undergrad, and lots of people don’t.
With a 2.5 GPA, I’d say you don’t have enough time to retake classes to make any meaningful difference between now and December.
I’d agree with the advice to take some time between college and grad school. Maybe work as a lab manager if you can get a job in that role, or doing psychological research and/or clinical work (not direct, of course, but assisting) in between. Having that kind of experience - and maybe taking a few graduate-level classes - will help you overcome that 2.5 GPA in a couple years.
