generally speaking, is it better to have a masters degree in the same engineering field as your bachelors degree and be very specialized in that field or is it better to have a masters in a different field and be well-rounded? what would employers value more?

This would be a better question to ask in the Engineering forums, but I’ll give you my opinion (disclaimer: Freshman undergraduate).

Depending on what you want to do, will the breath be useful? I can’t think of a job where an undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering and a Masters in Biomedical could possibly both be used. But for instance, with a Bachelors in Electrical Engineering and a Masters in Computer Engineering, there are many jobs where that breath could be useful. Could also happen in more unrelated fields, like Computer Science and Operations Research (if you call either of those engineering, they’re both in the engineering school at U of M).
