Master's Degree

I was wondering if I should go and get my masters. I have a BS degree in General Business Administration. I did not have a minor or concentration. I changed my major once and I changed schools. I was also in a special program that helped me transition from high school to college. I did not have time to get a minor or concentration. I have alot of people trying to get me to go to grad school, but there are a few problems with that. First I do not have enough money to pay for another two years worth of classes. I have a job, but the job is not in my field its in the mental health field. I do not make enough money to go and get a masters. I can’t pay my current bills with the job I have now. Why should I go out and make another big bill for myself because college is one big bill. When it comes to grad school there is not much in the lines for financial aide so I would be on my own. Plus why should I get a masters when I cant do anything with the BS. I have been having my BS for four years and I have not used it once. I would have to take the gmat or gre which im not good at those type of tests. I would have to apply to several colleges based on my scores. I would have to enroll and buy books. I would have to put another two years of my life on hold. I want to get my certificate in Human Resource Management because I am one class off and its something I want to do. I dont know what to do can someone help me?

Can someone help me?

Sounds like you already made up your mind - can’t afford a master degree right now, so don’t. If you want to work in the HR field then get the certificate; having some more specific schooling will help get a better job.

You might want to consider going to a career counselor to help understand where your skills and interests best fit in the job market. Then can determine whether additional schooling would help. But consider that some employers pay for grad school (at least something) and it might be better getting a job in such a company then have them help pay for your degree.

You already said you can’t afford grad school so what advice do you want exactly? I would try to re-connect with someone from career services at your college and see if someone there can help you.

A masters degree is like a corvette. They look nice but no one “needs” a masters degree. Even with a masters, with your limited business experience it would take you years to get a job that would pay you a high enough salary to justify the masters degree. Get more work experience under your belt. Combine your buisness degree with your healthcare experience and pursue something in nursing home or hospital administration. You will get paid well. I’m sorry to break it to you but a BS in business administration is like a BS in theatre. You should have concentrated in a number major like finance and accounting to make good money. You sadly won’t make much more in a human resource career. I do suggest you obtain a post bachelor’s certificate in MIS (management information systems) if you like technology, IT, computer, software
Accounting (taxes, auditing,fraud, tax law)
Finance (investment, stock, dividends)

Those majors are worth investment and you’ll see money come in

I might just get the certificate in human resource management and be done with it. I will take in consideration everyone’s opinions. Does any one else want to add something. I need as much input as possible.

Many employers offer tuition assistance.
