Masters in CS with Game Programming as the focus

Hey,

I am Sam Collins and am currently in my senior year doing a bachelors in CS in India. I am planning to do a Masters in CS/Interactive Entertainment or equivalent at fall 2007 as I aspire to become a game programmer.

I have some info about the schools that offer these and I have shortlisted them to three which encompasses CMU's ETC, DigiPen's MS in CS and FIEA's Masters in Interactive Entertainment. What I would like to know is which one of these could easily be better than the others. If its DigiPen or FIEA, I can pay my way through. But if its CMU (I prefer it because its got great reputation and contacts) I would have to depend on scholarships and stuff as its too expensive. Is it easy or what will be academics requirements to obtain one as an international student.

Thanks,
Sam Collins

CMU for computer science is absolutely one of the best schools in the world, for that. I would think that if it were at all possible to get a degree from CMU, it is probably worth it due to the incredible worldwide prestiege of the school.

One thing would be that CMU is a very "intense" school, you may find the workload is significantly more challenging than you would find elsewhere especially at a place like Digipen. I don't know how it would compare exactly to workloads in India, but from what I know about the tough entrance examinations it may not be a problem. Definitely coming from a place like IIT would not be a problem, you may need to ask people at your particular school who may know more.

It may be difficult to qualify for scholarships and such as an international student for a masters degree. An absolute requirement for admission would be an acceptable TOEFL score and acceptable GRE scores.

I don't know if you've considered this (<a href="http://gamepipe.usc.edu/Masters.php%5B/url%5D">http://gamepipe.usc.edu/Masters.php</a>) either, but you may want to look.

I am personally not aware of DigiPen or FIEA, but CMU's computer science program is very good... I think that you may require subject gre for admission (just check),,, once you get admission - getting aid depends on you scores as well as research experience... i have seen many international students getting aid after reaching states.

I would also recommend looking at other universities that have good computer animation/vision programs--- as these areas are realted to gaming... see the research they are doing in these areas..

good luck,
**pmat

Hey,

I went through the website of the USC's Gamepipe. The program is really impressive but its very new. It has only begun this year. So, I am not so sure about it because I really want to go to a place where I can learn a lot and be able to put my foot down on the industry easily. This is important because as international students have to go through a lot of procedures before they can work there. But CMU on the other hand makes it really simple of the international students to work and they have a lot of contracts with the game studios which have promised to take 10's of students from the program for internships and co-ops.

Does USC's Gamepipe match CMU's ETC?

Thanks,
Sam Collins.

I’m also interested in this topic. I am an undergrad at CMU going to graduate with an art degree and currently, I’m looking at UCF FIEA (University of Central Florida’s Florida Interactive Entertainment Academy) and CMU ETC (Carnegie Mellon University’s Entertainment Technology Center). Just wondering if anyone can give any information between the two. Also, are there other schools with similar programs?

you should look into upenn as well
they have a program called “Master of Computer Graphics and Game Technology Program” which seemed interesting.

Electronic Arts helped designed the UCF program. So UCF would be the place to go.

This is an excerpt from Randy Pausch’s final lecture (one of the founder of CMU ETC program). In this video he mentioned CMU ETC program. It looked good to me.
