Hi,

Does anyone know any good resources to look up good programs for a masters/PhD in social work (particularly in medicine) or for a masters in public health? I know I want to be in the area of medicine, and I'm trying to find programs that will provide opportunities in that area.

Thanks.

@ bumping this thread

I am also interested if anyone knows whether a MSW or Phd in Social Work is better if I plan to have a career in policy/grantwriting/nonprofit management.

The folks I know with MSWs are administrators in social work environments (as opposed to, say, case managers). Their jobs inevitably involve grantwriting.

The folks I know with PhDs in Social Work are professors.

@ Professor X

What if I want to work in a resarch association or grantwriting foundation? I can see myself as a policymker and fundraiser in a nonproft. I also enjoy researching social problems. I may not become a professor but will the PhD offer me more money and clout?

This is not my field (it's my ex's), but it seems to me that an MPA or MPP might be what you're looking for. There are also combo MPA/MSWs, I think.

The PhD in SW seems to me to be pretty much confined to academics.

But again, not my field. Ask your professors in SW.

I am a clinical psychologist who supervises 7 social workers, MSWs. Couple of them are senior clinical administrators. I am very familiar with this degree because throughout my agency there are social workers sprinkled all over the hierarchy.

Typically, the MSW is a case manager, after some years may rise to be a clinical administrator or even plain administrator depending on the nature of the agency. Some, very few, may end up as CEO of a clinical facility. Almost no one will end up writing grants/policy papers/doing real research.

If you want to do the latter, do MPH or PhD in Public Administration. PhD in social work is useless except in academia. Hope this helps, if you need more info, please PM me. Thanks.

I will look into the MPP/MSW route. Thanks.

Can anyone tell me if the MPP is useful if I want to run my own community foundation? I don't really care about the math.
