Masters vs. PhD in History

My son will graduate next year with an undergraduate degree in History. He thinks that there are Masters' programs out there (vs. PhD) that will provide stipends for graduate assistants in history, but after looking through a few threads on this site, it seems that those are mostly available for PhD students.
I'd appreciate any feedback anyone can provide.
Thanks!

There are definitely many MA programs in history that provide stipends for top students who are awarded teaching and research assistantships.

Just out of curiosity, since I am planning on perhaps getting my PhD in History in some form, what school does your son attend, and why the MA instead of the PhD?
