MAT 104..can anyone take it??

I want to take MAT 104 but is there any restrictions?? I was going to take MAT103, but I would rather take 104...

Hi,
I am sure they will let you take MAT 104. The course itself (MAT 104) is not that difficult if you have the necessary background coming in. Make sure, however, that you have a solid knowledge of limits before you enrol in the course. Otherwise, it can turn into an excruciating experience. If you did IB Math Methods, I'd say you're better off taking it slow and enrolling in MAT 103 in the fall and then taking MAT 104 in the spring. I certainly wish I had done so. :)

Cheers,
Marek'08

I've taken BC Calc when I was a junior....so it's been a while....would it be better to just take MAT 103 so that I will be able to refresh myself with calc??

krbxtigerz, im in the same situation. i listed MAT 104, but i think i'm going to wait until my advising appointment and ask.

Did you take the AP when you took the class junior year? If you did, you probably test out of it...

I think you'll probably start remembering things rather quickly if you have taken the class before. 104 is probably fine.

I'd take 104. A ton of people who already know the 103 material fairly well but didn't take the AP test take 103 as their QR, and apparently the curve is brutal as a result.

AP score of calc is not needed right?? I'll just take MAT 104 then...thanks everyone

Thank G-d for this thread!

I have a question. I am planning on being a mol bio major and pre-med. My dream is to get into a top knotch, top 10 med school. This said, I was wondering if taking a more rigorous math course in freshman year is really all that important? I was planning on taking MAT 201- multivariable calc., but now i dont know if i should. Should I just take MAT 104? What kind of students usually take MAT 201? are there many freshman? are they usually engineering students?

I like math, but my love for it doesnt compare to my love for biology. I took IB Math Methods and AP Calc BC during senior year. I did well-- 7 in IB and 4/5 in BC Calc.

What do i do?? I cant help but think ahead to transcripts when applying to med school.

Thanks, --David--

You should take a 200 level. You obviously know enough to test out of 104 if you did so well on your tests, and you're a math/science person. Do you really want to repeat the same material?

My 201 class was just about half freshman, and not all (or even most) were engineers. You will have to do the problem sets and understand most of them to do well, but you shouldn't worry about it if you're organised. I know that no one I've talked to agrees with me, but I think that 201 is a beautifully designed course (don't laugh!) where everything comes together into one big theorem at the end. It's almost like a work of literature, a sort of apotheosis in integration, if you will. Oh, and I'd forgotten everything about integration when I started the course, but it took no time to pick it back up.

im in the same boat. got a 5 on ap calc bc and probably taking MAT 201. but im worried that ive already forgotten a lot of the materal (particularly integration, series, and sums)

But most people will be in the same situation (having forgotten a lot since taking the test). You could do some self review, but you'll probably remember most of it.

if you need to get on to higher math and you have an ok background in calc, go ahead and take 104. you'll probably be ok, but if you're not you can drop down to 103. 104 starts in ch 7 of the book (integrals, u substitutions i think), while 103 starts from the beginning with limits, derivatives, etc. i took 103 for an easy a.

Thanks very much!
