Match me! Art Schools in New England!

Hi! I would love recommendations for schools in New England with good art and humanities programs!
I am homeschooled and a Junior in high school living in New York City.
I want to begin school undeclared but I am interested in writing, photography, and queer/feminist studies. I do not yet have my GPA or my test scores. I don’t know my family’s exact budget but my sister goes to SUNY Purchase and I think that I will be going to a college in that same range

You’ll get much better responses than I can give - but a few that come to mind for me:

  1. Emerson
  2. Hartford
  3. RISD

I thought of Bennington but not sure it works.

I did a search for Photography and others that could work for you that also had English and gender/queer studies and I also found Endicott and Fitchburg State.

Hope that helps.

Mass College of Liberal Arts.

Lesley University

Hampshire College.

Also take a look at the women’s colleges in the same 5 college consortium as HC. You may have a better shot than you think at Smith and Mt Holyoke where last year’s acceptance rates were 39% and 52% respectively.

The arts scene has been emerging at Eastern Connecticut State U. Still small but worth a look. They do have a cross registration policy with University of Connecticut, which is just up the road and has lots to offer in the arts.

I think that U of Hartford in particular is a great recommendation. The history of the Hartford Art School goes back to a time when it was an independent Art School, long before U of H was even founded. It’s long legacy and history bring a level of quality that comes only with such such long traditions. The fact that it’s been part of a university for a number of decades now means that you also have access to the humanities that you’re also interested in.

You will undoubtedly get some better recommendations from others as well, but here are some I’d consider based on the majors you’re interested in. All of these have majors in English which may have a concentration in writing.

• College of the Atlantic (ME): Offers majors in photography, gay/lesbian studies, creative writing, and women’s studies

• Providence (RI): Offers majors in photography, women’s studies, and creative writing
• Hofstra (NY): Offers majors in photography, women’s studies, and creative writing
• SUNY Fredonia (NY): Offers majors in photography, women’s studies, and creative writing
• SUNY Purchase (NY): Offers majors in photography, women’s studies, and creative writing

• SUNY New Paltz (NY): Offers majors in photography and women’s studies
• U. of Hartford (CT): Offers majors in photography and women’s studies
• Bard (NY): Offers majors in photography, creative writing, and is generally strong in the arts

• Salve Regina: Photography
• SUNY College Oneonta (NY): Photography
• Endicott (MA): Photography
• Cazenovia (NY): Commercial Photography & Photography
• Fitchburg State (MA): Photography
• Husson (ME): Photography
