I agree that this is a very reachy list. If you don’t qualify for need based aid, you can unfortunately eliminate many of these schools. JHU, Rice, and Chicago aren’t going to be even close to affordable.

The out of state publics for your intended major are also going to be reaches, especially UT and UNC. They are both mandated to fill the vast majority of their class instate.

I’d keep UMD and Purdue on your list since while still reaches for your major, are in the ballpark for affordability and IMO, you have a shot at both.

Looks like even with your UW 3.7, you are still in the top 10% of your class so I’d talk to your GC to see where students with similar stats have been accepted in previous years.

Your uw gpa of 3.7 is quite good. I agree that UMD might work for you; if applying to UMD, you must apply EA by November 1 to have a shot. Perhaps take a look at the Analytics and Operations Management at Bucknell’s College of Management?

I agree OP should apply to NJIT.
Stevens is not public, and OP is unlikely to get enough merit aid to make it affordable.

The elite private universities/colleges do not look at weighted grades. They only look at unweighted grades because private schools normally do not weigh grades. Top schools also tend to only look at the important academic classes when they recalculate GPAs (i.e., Gym doesn’t usually count).

Your child is still impressive but I wanted to point this piece out to you.

Ohio State doesn’t admit by major, so should be an easier admit than Purdue CS. He can study CS outside of the Engineering College with the BS or BA in CIS see Majors | Computer Science and Engineering and at the bottom of that page under alternate majors there is a link to the Data Analytics major too.

Would he be interested in business information systems? He’d probably be able to get into Fisher as a direct admit and could transfer out if he felt it wasn’t a good fit. Specializations & Minors | Fisher College of Business

He’d be in range for National Buckeye, it’s not automatic so not guaranteed but likely. Merit-based scholarships - The Ohio State University

You may want to take a look at:

Indiana University - Bloomington
North Carolina State
U. of Arizona
U. of Maryland - College Park
U. of North Carolina - Charlotte

I think NJIT may be harder than Rutgers

Yes, true. But easier (and cheaper) than Purdue or UMD so worth a shot.

I’m in NJ, just based on the students I know NJIT appears to be an easier admit than Rutgers New Brunswick which seems to get more competitive each year, behind TCNJ (those two seem to flip flop in ratings).

Last year we got into all versions of Rutgers we cared about, and were waitlisted at NJIT. unhooked 3.3/1530. CS/CE.

Good test score, all of my daughter’s friends with 3.4 TO were rejected from Rutgers.

Also junior GPA may have been 3.65 and senior fall more like 3.8 or so. 9 APs and 5 Honors – may have slid through. Point remains that we were turned down at NJIT.

FYI - they are changing their admissions for 2023:

Starting Autumn 2023

In order to implement a transparent and equitable admission process and recognizing the challenges in meeting the demand and space availability in popular majors, effective Autumn 2023 the college will limit enrollment options for all Columbus and Regional campus students pursuing the following majors:

  • Aerospace Engineering
  • Biomedical Engineering
  • Computer Science and Engineering (ENG) / Computer and Information Science (ASC)
  • Mechanical Engineering

Prospective Ohio State students (freshmen and transfers) interested in one of these majors will need to apply to the major during the undergraduate admissions process.

Current Ohio State students may continue to switch into these pre-major programs through Summer 2023. Starting Autumn 2023, students will no longer be permitted to switch into these pre-major programs. Alternatively, students will be offered the opportunity to switch into pre-major or major programs that have capacity.
