Hi guys

I need suggestions for match schools and low reach schools for computer science. I am an indian senior on the east coast.

Here are the important stats

Internship at high-level computer science company (since freshman year) for Javascript and HTML experience. Worked on a project to help those in failing schools in my district and helped in creating a curriculum for students in elementary/middle school for Javascript.

Thanks for reading!

Because CS is a popular major, be wary of using entire school stats if the school admits by major, since CS may be a more selective major. Also, some schools admit undeclared or premajor and require competitive admission later to the major.

I.e. an apparent match may be a reach for CS, and an apparent safety may be a match or reach for CS.

What are your cost constraints and state of residency?

I live in CT, and I don’t really have cost restraints

Northeastern

Rochester, Case Western, RPI, Lehigh, Northeastern, WPI

@ucbalumnus second that.

If you’re staying on the East Coast, it depends on the state in live in. Penn State and Pitt have great CS programs and are great for PA students. Virginia Tech is probably the best public techy school on the East Coast.

Note that you should be getting an 800 on your math section of the new SAT. And to get into the tougher schools (or even just to have a shot), you should take the Math II Subject Test and get an 800 on that.

I had similar stats to yours, and I (as a PA resident) got into Penn State, Pitt, Case, Georgia Tech, and UCLA. I ultimately chose UCLA because of the weather, it had the best CS program out of all of the schools I applied to (other than GT), and I could hate on SC (which was actually my first choice). I got waitlisted, then denied, from Carnegie, same with Michigan (EA), and Berkeley.

I would say for a CS student, if you want to be admitted to a top university for CS (MIT, Stanford, Caltech, etc.), then build your programming experience. You said you took AP CS (or the exam, at least) in your freshman year. I took it my junior year. You should have 2 years more experience than senior me. You need to show this experience at hackathons or on your Github.

Thanks for the advice! Yes i scored an 800 on Math level 2 and chemistry for my subject tests. And an 800 on my SAT math. Would my internship at the company be a good indicator of my experience?

@redwall1521 - I remember you from the USC thread! Good to hear you are happy at UCLA

OP you have some great stats (nice on subject tests) and experience, well rounded, solid bio. Do you want to stay on east coast? I can say USC has been an amazing experience and education for my CS major. His peers/friends are an amazing group of students and the opportunities to take his education to as a high a level as he wants, while getting important and unique experiences through CS clubs and activities (some formal some informal) have been fabulous. Internships were easy and impressive out of there.

I would love to stay on the east coast and Im looking at schools like duke and brown, but if USC offers a promising computer science track then ill be sure to check it out too! Thanks for you compliments and advice’

UMD College Park (might even be a low-match/safety)

UIUC (CS in LAS) would be a match

Both are excellent Computer Science programs.

UIUC (CS in Engineering) and Michigan (CS in LSA or CSE) would be low reaches
