Matches and Safeties for an Average Kid

Title says it all. Preferably East Coast Schools, but anywhere is fine. Please and Thank You !

Female
White

Public school in NJ
~1200 kids?
mildly competitive

GPA: 3.5 (uw)
SAT: CR:550, W: 590, M:590, 1760
ridiculously average right? I plan on retaking I'm hoping to just break the 2000 mark. I may also take the ACT.

I'm taking my SATII's in the fall, I expect at least 700s in Biology and US History (I've been prepping hard)

APs:
History: 4
Psychology: 4
Gov: 5
Bio: 3
I don't even know if I should report these.

EC's ... which kinda suck.
Model Congress, 3 years
French Club, 3 years, shoo in for president next year
Student Council, 3 years
NHS, more like a filler really
French Honor Society
100+ community service hours, no depth whatsoever, just did it as a requirement.

Next year (senior year), I'm taking the most rigorous schedule available. I know my GPA kinda sucks, but it's been an upward trend, so isn't that all that matters?

Perhaps you can list what appeals you in a college…?

^ Yea I guess that would be smart, lol.

Size doesn’t really matter to me. I definitely want an amazing campus. I’m not really interested in city colleges, for example I could never go to college in NYC. I also plan to join a sorority, however this isn’t a must. A nice social life of course, I’m not talking about smoking and drinking every weekend, but some place to go on the weekend, maybe somewhere where the beach isn’t too far away.

A laid back student body, and chances to study abroad are a definite must. Also, money isn’t really an issue either. Hmm, any other questions?

Do you need FA? What do you want to study?

Okay, this might help…

Global Experience- Kalamazoo College

Reputable State School- Clemson, Purdue, IU

LAC (quirky)- Bennington, Warren Wilson

LAC (regular-ish)- Allegheny, Ohio Wesleyan, Roanoke

Catholic- U Scranton, U Dayton

Protestant- Calvin, Muhlenberg

Private- Alfred, WPI,

maybe utah state university

3.5 UW GPA is not bad, you’ve been spending too much time on CC :)

If you do raise your SAT, you could get into some decent schools.
You might get some merit aid at UAlabama. I’m looking at the school and quite frankly it looks awesome. You may get a small scholarship with your current numbers, but being a 2000 you would get a fairly significant award. Probably not full tuition, but it could make it similar to in-state rates.

^^ I think she wanted east coast schools. It depends on what state you’re from, but as a safety it couldn’t hurt to pick your state school. (Like Penn State, etc.)

Oops, sorry, just throwing it out there because I like it so much :)

But on the east coast, South Carolina is pretty good with the merit aid too. I might apply there. Maybe the College of Charleston, but I believe they have a relatively urban campus, which you said you didn’t want. But they are close to beach.

Rutgers, The College of New Jersey, Drew University, Penn State, UNC-Wilmington, Mary Washington, South Carolina, Catholic University

UNC Wilmington, Quinnipiac, Eckerd (FL), Hobart William Smith (NY), UNH, College of Charleston (SC) and Endicott (MA). They may not meet all your requirements but some may be worth a look.

definetly take ACT and PSAT, these are musts for good schools. also enter some national competitions, you never know, you might get an award. looks great on resume. also, to quote a previous replier, upenn is ivy league, (really good) (hard to get into with that resume) (no offense)

LOL sabortooth. Penn State, not UPenn. Penn State would be a good match for the OP, UPenn would not.

Coastal Carolina University would be a match with your stats, it’s got Greek life, and it’s by some really nice beaches. A lot of people from NJ go there. TCNJ or Drew would be good safeties, they both have pretty campuses. I know Drew has Greek life, but idk about TCNJ. If you can get your SATs up Rutgers would be a safety, too. I’ve noticed that an in-state with SATs over 2000 is pretty much automatically accepted there. If you want you can PM me.

Yes I do need financial aid, I’ll take what I can get. The rest are going to be loans, however my parents will be paying for all my expenses. I’m planning on majoring in Political Science.

@OHKID
Thanks, unfortunately I don’t know where half of those are, but I’ll definitely look into them.

Haha yea I thought my GPA was pretty good, until I heard horror stories about people ending up with a 3.6669. As for UAlabama I don’t think I wont to go to college that deep into the South.

@willmingtonwave & poi
Thanks, I’ll look up those schools as well.

None taken, I doubt I’ll apply to an Ivys at all, I’m waiting for grad school! :D

Wow, I am definitely going to check out CCU. I’ve also heard amazing things about Drew but haven’t really thought to consider it. Thanks for the input. I’ll be applying to TCNJ and Rutgers of course though, living in New Jersey, there just kind of “default” colleges to apply to, haha.

Take a look at some good smaller East Coast schools not far from beaches which favor study abroad; have nice campuses; not far from cities; meet your SATs–Goucher; Drew; Muhlenberg; Fairfield; Connecticut College. Also Maryland, Delaware and UConn

Has anyone visited Endicott? I know that is on the beach.

Maybe Dickinson or Muhlenberg?
