sat i: 2140 (800 w, 740 cr, 600 m)
sat ii's: 730 - literature, 710 - u.s. history
gpa: uw: 3.85, w: 4.6
rank: not sure, but somewhere in the top 3%

i think i have a lot of reaches on my list (yale, princeton, stanford are the big three) but are the following great schools reaches or matches for me? i don't want to apply to all reaches, after all.

cornell
washington uni in st. louis
northwestern
university of chicago
brown

also, if they are all reaches, can you suggest some schools of similar caliber that would be matches? thanks!

Well, they are reaches for almost everyone. For matches or safeties, I would suggest Macalester, Grinnell, Trinity College if you like LACs. For medium size schools, I would suggest Brandeis, Rochester, George Washington, Case Western, and Lehigh.

rodney, depends on what else the OP has in his or her app. The math score is low for those schools, but if OP has state level or national recognition at something, is planning an usual humanities major (classics anyone?), has unusual ECS, etc…the 600 may not matter that much.

If LACs are a possibility, and you are male, take a look at Vassar. Since your current list is LAC-free, I assume that’s not what you want, however. I think the GW option is a good suggestion.

i already took the act and did worse on the math than on the sat. and then i studied my butt off for my sat retake on the math but did wayyyy worse than i did without the studying!! it’s so frustrating that something like that could automatically get me rejected from schools where i could succeed in my major (english or something in the humanities). :(

“The math score is low for those schools, but if OP has state level or national recognition at something”

no :(

“is planning an usual humanities major (classics anyone?)”

does this really help though? i thought they didn’t really care about your major.

“has unusual ECS”

i think i do.

“If LACs are a possibility, and you are male, take a look at Vassar.”

any particular reason? cuz there are way more girls there?

but yeah i’m not really looking at lacs too much…

i’ll go look up george washington i guess. really sad about the others though.

edit: lol at all the ":("s on this post but its really how i feel right now.

I would say retake your SAT if that’s possible and boost your math score - it will hurt you.
and i think pretty much every school on your list would be a reach for anyone.
so maybe try some safeties. washington uni in st. louis will be a match

Tufts is in the same category as the other schools you listed. They are ‘reachy’ in that you can’t count on being admitted without the stellar test scores/grades/recs. Unusual EC may be your ticket. Or if you come from a part of the country that the school doesn’t get a lot of applicants from. (Friend’s kid with similar test scores and grades was rejected at Northwestern, Wash U, Tufts-a hard blow for a smart, hard-working student.)

I suggested Vassar because they have a top quality humanities program that is easier for boys to get into than girls, due to the gender imbalance. The urban location seems consistent with the other schools you picked-not that Poughkeepsie is comparable to Chicago, but on the other hand, the Vassar campus is beautiful.

And yes, your field of study matters when a school has a tenured faculty but very few students interested in majoring in that field. Classics is one dept. where that is often the case. German Studies is another.
