Matches Please! High GPA, SAT, weak ECs

Hi, I'd like you guys to point out some matches for me!
what I'm looking for-
- I'm looking for a nerdy school. I am a big nerd, my friends are all big nerds, and I probably wouldn't feel comfortable in a preppy-type school. A big state U with a good honors college with honors housing is good enough I guess.
-I'm looking also for a school that gives lots of need-based aid, my family makes about
42k a year :)
- I'm planning to major in History or Biology, one of those, or major and minor in those two......

Stats:
SAT:2210
UW GPA: 3.9
Rank: #20 of 800
My course load was the most rigorous at my school: mostly AP courses.

etc: Our school gives a licensing/internship program: I will graduate certified as a Pharm Tech through our school.

Ec: My weakest part of my application, I've only joined a few random clubs, the usual, NHS, etc and hold an officers position in only one.
Volunteering: I've volunteered at my church school as a Sunday School teacher for 3 years.
Every summer, since freshman year, I've volunteered as a teacher's assistant in a summer school program.
Hospital: I've volunteered for about a year :/
I think I'd do well in SAT IIs, should i take some?

Thank you!

What’s the breakdown of your SAT’S? That score should be high enough to get you some merit aid. There are lots of threads on this. Grinnell is good for merit aid and not especially preppy. Do you have a location preference?

My SAT breakdown is CR 780, M 730 and W 700.
I don’t have a location preference, I’d actually prefer not to stay in the south.

Grinnell? I thought I was shooting too high; that actually is my 1st choice, but I thought
it would be a reach/ high match :X Thanks!

^ Unfortunately Grinnell rates ECs as very important so it would be tougher than you think from the scores. On the other hand most Publics Us don’t care about ECs.

What is your home state? That will generally be the least expensive set of schools to attend. Alabama, Tulane, Auburn, Mississippi, Arizona would probably all offer scholarships.

DD2 is a self-professed geek and liked Carleton, Lewis and Clark, Knox. Carleton is great for aid but would be a high-match.

I lump EC clubs/sports with work experience. In that context, your volunteer work is a really great EC.

Although you prefer not to stay in the South, you MUST apply to Bama with those stats! The automatic merit (Presidential Scholarship) would provide free tuition. If you are National Merit Finalist then you would get free ride. The honor’s college housing is suppose to be quite nice.

I am from Texas. Yeppers.
I was thinking about applying to one of UT’s honors programs, but they seem really hard
to get into
I’ve never looked into Alabama, I’ll check that out, thank you!

I think you look good for Grinnell. If you’ve been teaching Sunday school for three years (and are presumably very engaged in your church) and completed your Pharm Tech cert, that shows a lot of commitment-ECs don’t have to be school clubs!

Other intellectual, non-preppy schools like Grinnell that give good financial aid? Macalester comes to mind.

Has lots of good ideas.

If you’d like to do even more research, read these two old threads for specific find-the-money techniques:

You would probably like Reed and Carleton.

Does Reed give out lots of aid?

And do you guys think I have a shot at woman’s colleges, such as Bryn Mawr, Smith, etc?

I’m also a URM, does this help?

Reed meets full need for all four years.

Oberlin might be another match.

Being a URM often helps, at least somewhat.

I think people are being a little conservative in their estimates. Grinnell’s SAT range is about 1240-1500 and you have a 1510. And you are a URM. Of course there’s no guarantee but I would think you have an excellent chance. And you should have a good shot at Bryn Mawr, Smith and even Wellesley. I think Wellesley still has an early indication program which is not binding and they let you know in late Feb. that you are very likely or not. Check that out. Swarthmore would be a reach but worth checking out. But I don’t know where you are likely to get the most money. Try to apply to quite a few places so you can weigh the offers.

Carnegie Mellon- I heard it is a pretty nerdy school and you would probably get some need based aid.

U Chicago- gives great need based aid but is a little harder to get accepted. Will be a reach but its worth applying.
