Matches/Safeties in the West-- Physics/Math

My daughter's college list is four elite schools, St. Olaf, and probably one of our state schools. Though it is getting late, it would be nice to find an alternative to the state schools for safety. Also more schools like St. Olaf would be wonderful, maybe something similar that is a little more of a sure thing and/or closer to home.

Criteria (with daughter's interests in mind, but with some of my biases):

-Strong in math and science, but not "tech"
-student body that is relatively serious about learning
-3000 to about 7000 UG
-Not a small town; can be urban but needs a campus life, not just city life
-in the West, possibly Midwest
-merit aid still available

The last two are from me. I don't see going across the country or spending lots of money unless the school has something special going for it.

D liked Rochester well enough when we visited, but didn't pursue it. I think that is because the only buzz she has heard on it has been from me. She originally wasn't interested in St. Olaf, but when people at math camp talked about it, it became more attractive. She did an overnight visit and liked it very much.

A bit about D: 2300 SAT (1580 CR/M); subject tests are Math II 790, Bio 670, US History 740(?). Has won prizes at state-level math competitions. Orchestra is main EC. Dabbles in sports. A little community service.

Has she looked at any of the Claremont colleges? Rice?

A little smaller than she likes: Whitman and Macalester.

Maybe Case Western, as a safety? They give excellent merit aid.

Carleton College.

Isn't St. Olaf safe enough?
