matching CMU financial aid with a nonpeer instution

I was admitted to both Wesleyan and CMU and Wesleyan offered me around 56k with loans/grants while CMU offered 37k with loans and grants. Even though wesleyan isn't a peer institution, can i try to get CMU to match wesleyan's financial aid? If so, how do i do it and how often does CMU match the aid of a non peer institution?

Thanks

I’m in a semi-similar situation. I was offered a better aid from Oberlin. I am not hopeful though, they say on their site that if a campus is considered “rural” they will never consider it a peer institution.

It’s doubtful, because those are primarily liberal arts institutions, which CMU doesn’t really consider to be peer institutions. However, it’s always worth a try. The worst they can say is no, right?

well, wesleyan really isn’t in a rural place. It is in middletown, CT

observe the word semi…

completelykate: I don’t even know what a peer institution is, but NYU offered me $5000 and CMU matched that, so it’s possible for smaller amounts, at least. (I’m in H&SS.) Then again, NYU’s more well-known than Wesleyan.

NYU is also more on the level of a peer institution. Olin and Wesleyan are great schools, but they’re a little bit under the radar. NYU, on the other hand, would be worth a bargaining chip in the humanities.

My son was accepted by tulane, getech, auburn and cmu, do you think cmu will match any of these school’s fin aid?

I’m fairly certain Georgia Tech is a peer institution,
