Material question

Is Joseph Arnone a bad decision for a college audition? While he typically writes one-act plays, they are not really ever meant to be performed. I have really connected with one of his monologues, but I don’t know if he is a bad idea that would put a black mark by my name in the audition room. Any advice would be welcome! Thanks.

I don’t think it would necessarily hurt you, but I also don’t think it would help you and it’s easy to get those brownie points with the pick of the piece! You’re not only showing the auditors your skill, but also, with the piece you’re performing, your interests. By picking a piece that’s well respected and not usually performed, you’re comunicating to the auditor that you’re cultured in the subject and well read. I’m not entirely sure, but I don’t think that a piece by that playwright would gain any curiosity towards you in the audition room. Also, the better the writing is, the better it will communicate, so I would look for pieces by top playwrights so you don’t have to work as hard haha. Maybe look for other pieces before you commit to see if something reaches out to you as much. But it’s all about what you feel connected to, too. And if you feel like that piece will bring out the best you have to offer, then brownie points don’t really matter that much!
