How difficult is it to keep a 3.5 GPA in this program? Do a lot of engineers go to grad school after 4-6 years from Berkeley engineering?

I'm interested in this too (I'm majorin in MSE :P).

bumptumpbu

slightly difficult since your lower division requirements are still math 1a/b, 53, 54, and physics 7ab

i'd disagree. i did fine in the math classes. physics 7 series kicked my ass but mostly because it's curved and i went in with no background in physics while most of the other kids knew the material to some extent. a lot of my friends slept through 7 series. i'm finding some of the upper div curves to be a little mean...

i'm not sure how useful this info is, but cutoff for tau beta pi (honor society) was above a 3.75, which corresponds to top 1/8 of juniors.

ME/MSE second year here.

oo, flippityflop, can you please tell me some of your experiences at Berkeley as a MSE?

i started off as just a mechie and like it quite a bit. one of our required classes is e45, intro to mat sci, and i loved it... i have a much better background with chem than i did with physics, so that's probably part of it. the other part was that i simply loved the professor (devine). instead of watering things down and telling us to just trust what we're told, he went into a lot of detail, gave us a crash course in quantum mechanics, etc etc... and then he applied all of that to real projects that he's worked on as a consultant. a lot of people hated it, but a few of us have switched over to MSE since then.

MSE's building, hearst mining, is really nice. best offices i've seen on campus so far. much better facilities than what we have for ME... i think MSE has a lot more money than ME.

i really don't know what to tell you. i can maybe answer more specific questions.

Do you know anyone double majoring with MSE & CHE? Is that an insane double, or is there a decent amount of overlap?

-A

there's a special program for ChE/MSE, same with ME/MSE, EECS/MSE, and a few others. useful site:

a lot of people start off as some type of engineering, decide they like mat sci or want to do nano or something, then add MSE second semester of second year.
