Materials Engineering or Electrical Engineering? and Chance please!!?!

Hi everyone :] . im a high school senior planning to apply to UCI for either materials engineering or electrical engineering, im still a little confused about both those majors. Does anyone one know what each of them actually do, like everyday work life kind of thing. All i know is that im intrested in the nanotechnology :/. Also, does anyone know if these programs are good at UCI? and Lastly, you tell me your opinion on my chances of acceptance and if i need to work on anything? Here are my stats :

GPA: (10-12) 3.85 UW and 4.25 W
SAT: 1820 (for now im going to retake it in october and hopefully score in the 1900s or low 2000s) Math: 660 CR:590 Writing : 570
I also took another one that was less rounded : 1830 math : 740 Cr: 480 (probably bubbled wrong) and Writing 620

SAT2: Math 660 , im retaking math and taking chem.
ACT: im taking in september and hoping to score around 30-33 ( i gota 30 on my first practice test and a 33 on my second)
AP classes : 7 including senior year
(junior year)
Ap Calc AB - 4 on test
AP Chem - 4 on test
AP Us History- 3on test
Ap Econ
AP psychology
AP Calc BC
AP Rhet. (language and composition)

ECs: 150 hours of internship
Library volunteer hours
Brahma Tech program
Peer tutoring
and officer position in a club (minor club)

bump. even if you do not know the answer to the materials for vs electrical thing. please chance me :]

Match. Materials is most likely what you want. Just look it up on wikipedia lol. From what I understand material scientists work with alloys and metals while electrical engineers deal with electronics.

I say go for electrical engineering. There are more opportunities for them.

haha 1:1 XD Thanks guys for responces :] I was also thinking of applying for maybe business administration because i heard the engineering programs at Irvine are “too much research-based.”
Also, If anyone can chance me too that would be great:]

Materials science engineering at UCI deals with everything from ceramics, to alloys, to composites, to organic materials (actual synthesis, hands-on in class, etc.).

Most materials science engineering students whom I know also double in Mech. E, Chem. E, or some other engineering field to graduate with 2 or 3 engineering degrees for better starting salaries, job outlooks, or personal interest.

Engineering programs at UCI are indeed more theoretically based, but it all really depends on what your ultimate career goals are and how much you’re willing to actually understand the material. Bear in mind that you really won’t get into real engineering classes until mid 2nd-3rd year. Until then, you need to take 2 years of math, physics, some chem, etc. to form the foundation required to understand future engineering curriculum.

Best of luck on your choice!

thanks Anteat3r, If I were to double major in engineering, will it be too overwhelming? because i know just majoring in engineering itself is kind of intense. will i be able to hang out with friends and stuff? Thanks!!

Doubling in engineering or continuing on in engineering is a very personal decision in itself. Many people who start off in engineering leave or drop out for various reasons up until around the beginning of senior year.

So to answer your question, yes you will be able to hang around with friends/party as much as you’d like. Just budget your time accordingly, and you will do fine.
