Hello, I am an incoming freshman into the Materials Science and Engineering section. Could anybody currently in the engineering department tell me how hard calculus is supposed to be? I've heard its very difficult. I'm in calc bc and I struggle a little, but I can get a b.

I, too am an incoming MatSE freshman, and from what I’ve heard over and over again (from reading the boards and knowing plenty of UIUC engineers) is that if you get a good enough AP test score to place out of Calc II, by all means DO IT.

But if you aren’t a math whiz and you barely place out of Calc I, you should not go ahead and take Calc II.
I’m guessing if you can get a B in your Calc BC class you won’t need to worry about dropping out of your major, if that’s what worries you.

Generally speaking, people find Calc II to be the hardest, especially if your math background is only barely adequate.

ok, thanks a lot! I was kind of nervous, I’m good at science, but definitely not a natural with calc. But i feel a lot better now!
