I am looking to get a degree in Materials Science or at least get a degree in Mechanical Engineering with an emphasis on Materials. I recently was accepted into the University Of Texas at Austin but not under Mechanical Engineering. Instead I can choose to go into Physics or Mathematics. I am not too sad because I looked at the degree plan for ME and they’re only two MSE classes within the curriculum. What I was wondering was, if i chose to go to UT and go under Physics, would it be easy to transfer up to an MSE degree plan in graduate school? I always knew that I’d have to go to grad school for MSE, its just would a degree in Physics help me transfer up to an MSE program or not? Or should I simply pursue a degree in ME at the other Universities I got admitted to? Any Responses would be appreciated.
You can also look at graduate admissions pages for other schools’ materials engineering departments for their preferred qualifications. You can also look at the core graduate materials engineering courses for each program and then check what undergraduate courses are listed as prerequisites for them.
From the above, you can figure out what courses you need to include in your undergraduate course selection to prepare for graduate study in materials engineering (these courses may be part of your major or taken as electives outside your major).
