What is the difference? When should you take? And, can you take just Math for subject tests?
Math 2 includes precalculus and trig
Math 2 after taking precalculus (or may/June of that year), math 1 after Algebra 2 and geometry.
Can you? Yes. Should you? Well for any college that requests Subject Tests, it would be a waste to submit those 2 and nothing else. Math 1 and Math 2 are just 2 sides of the same coin. It would just be like taking Spanish and Spanish with Listening? It’s better to have another subject in addition to math.
Thanks @skieurope --what about a language as a third?
As a third after Math and another subject? I’m of the opinion that submitting more than 2 scores will not help in the admissions process, as admissions will consider the best 2.
Having said that, there are, IMO, valid reasons for taking/submitting more than 2. Having a 3rd in a foreign language is a valid reason. The rationale being that the FL score may not be one of the top 2 (or may not be wanted, if a program asks for one math and one science). However, for some colleges, a higher enough Subject Test score in a FL may exempt the student from the college’s FL requirement, or place them into a higher level.
Language is not your third test in this scenario; it’s your second. Math 1 and Math 2 don’t count as two separate subject tests for admissions purposes. They will look at your stronger math test and your language test as your two tests.
