I am taking trig and pre-calc (college prep not honors) and have a 96 average in the class. Teacher recommends all students not in honors take math 1 as opposed to math 2.

Is math 1 really frowned upon by colleges? The only college I think I will be applying to will require SAT II's is Boston University - most of the rest of the colleges on my list do not require SAT II's.

I had heard colleges do not think highly of math 1 - is that true of all colleges or just the HYP etc level colleges - BU is not in that leagus - so I didn't know which I should take.

Also does anyone have a list of colleges that do require SAT II's. I thought it was just a select few -

Thanks

Math II is advised over Math I for engineering majors because Math I is not much harder than SAT 1 Math.

If you are doing liberal arts in college, Math I may be sufficient to use as a SAT II subject.

Requirements depend on college but pretty much every top 20 school requires SAT II subject tests. The exceptions are ones that allow you to take ACT with writing in lieu of SAT I and SAT II. One of those schools is Rice.

Thanks TX - I don’t think I will be doing engineering but plan to study a science. I’m thinking of taking Physics I, math 1 and Math 2 all on the same day or trying Math 1 in June and if I do well then try Math 2 in the fall probably November - I’d be applying to BU regular decision so I think that would work out.

If you take ACT with writing, BU does nt need SAT IIs.

Make sure you take BOTH a Level 1 and Level 2 practice test before deciding which one to take. The curve on the Level 2 test is MUCH stronger than the Level 1 test. You can get A LOT of questions wrong on the level 2 test and still get a very good score. Since you’re in precalculus you should know most of the material covered on the Level 2 test.
