We are getting some conflicting information about which one to take. My son is through Pre-Calc.

I had read that either works as a subject test for most schools, but some schools actually prefer or want Math 2. Our counselor said after pre-calc is the time to take Math 2. But his tutor said you only need math 2 if you are going into a math major and you need trig before you take it.

Help.

thanks.

Math 2 is much more well-received by colleges for many majors besides math. Math 1 should only be taken if the student already has many subject tests

When is the right time? After the completion of Pre-Calc - does one have the math base needed to take Math 2?

If your son had trig included in his Pre-Calc class then he should be set to go. Have him take a practice test to see if he’s ready. There’s a giant SAT subject test book that has one test per each subject. There’s also an SAT book with 2 math I tests and 2 math II tests.

i’d like to echo what these people just said. pre-calc is absolutely enough. taking it later will be detrimental. the phenomenon is that calculus makes you forget everything you learning in algebra2/precalc. Trust me, reviewing that stuff again after learning calc is a killer.

one more reminder: the curve on math I is ridiculus. yeah the stuff is super easy, but to get an 800, you can’t make a single mistake. not even one. if your son has already taken precalc, math II would be much more beneficial.

Thanks everyone. That helps. Info on the college board site also indicates he should take math two.

Yeah, it’s definitely better to take Math II instead of Math I. Math II covers some introductory statistics (e.g. linear/quadratic regressions) and limits so it helps to know a bit of that.
