After reading through the trolling at end of the "Caltech vs MIT for engineering" thread, I decided I needed to post something that may actually be useful. To me at least.

Can a frosh test out of Ma 1a and 1c but not 1b? Or is it a skip-all-or-skip-none deal?

They're pretty weird from year to year. People definitely often test out of Math 1ab but not c, and their frosh schedule is 2ab 1c. But I haven't heard of anyone ever test out of 1ac but not b. So I have a feeling ab, at least, goes as a block.

If I recall correctly in order to test out of a class you have to test out of the previous one.

Galen

What about testing out just 1a but not 1bc?

For the year before, students could place out of Ma1ab, Ma1abc, or Ma1abc and 2ab (the entire sequence).

In theory (according to any written guidelines you will ever see...) you must test out of ma1b to test out of ANY math and must test out of all of math 1 to test out of any part of math 2 (although you can certainly test out of only part of math 2).
Having said that, i know of at least 2 instances in my class (caltech 2008) of people testing out of 1ac and NOT 1b, and taking 2a,1b freshman year and 2b sophomore year.
Starting with next year, 2a and 2b are interchanged (2a will be differential equations, 2b statistics) so I'm almost sure such an arrangement will not be allowed.
