Hello, I got accepted as a Physiology and Neuroscience major, and I took the MPE and scored into Math 10A. The testing evaluations also said that in order for me to take the Math 20 series, I have to take 4C first. Should I go the Math 20 route or stay in the Math 10 series for my major?

Also, is this a good schedule for this coming fall?
Math 10A (or 4C… maybe?)
Sociology 100
Chemistry 6A
BILD 3

or is it too much for my first quarter at UCSD along with the possibility of being a member of the Senate (I plan to join AS in some type…), other clubs, volunteer work, and maybe 1-2 sports clubs?

Thanks in advance!

Re. the math, have you taken any form of calc before? precal or Calc AB? I had taken precal but not calculus in high school, and the 10 series has not been bad.

Take the 10 series and start with Math 10a. I don’t know how hard Soc 100 is but the other three are doable together. I think you’ll be fine. You can always try it out for a couple weeks and then drop a class with no penalty if you need to.

the 10 series is ridiculously easy, i mean the first quarter you BARELY learn about derivatives and 10B you learn it in reverse!

Depending on how much you want to learn math, 10 or 20 will do just fine.

Math 4C has a LOT of information to cover, take Math10A then go to Math20A if you want to take 20 series, but if you want to just stick to 10series, just do it, its easy, most likely the easiest As you will ever get in UCSD.

@droobles91 - No I haven’t taken any calculus classes. I only took intermediate algebra and college algebra at a community college and I took Pre-cal at my high school. So maybe I will stick with 10A.

Thanks for the reply guys! yeah I might do what ChristianWu suggested and stick with the Math 10A class and later on I will decide if I want to jump to the 20 series (though I probably won’t and stick with 10 series like KingsElite said lol), and I will definitely stick with these classes for the Fall :)

ok, then I think the 10 series is the best choice, yeah

good luck!! enjoy yourself

Since you should take the 20 series, you have to take 4C fall quarter. And because 4C is a very easy class, you should add another class to your schedule. That way, you get to earn more units toward graduation and do a lot of activities at the same time.

I’m in the same boat as the poster, but I’m a human biology major. I thought I was required to take the 20 series correct? Therefore, should I take 4C and then move on to the 20 series or can I take 10A and move on to 20 from there? I was extremely hungover and late to that placement test so that could have affected my score. I’m pretty sure I’m ready for 20A.

What’s the difference between 20C and 20B? I’ve been reading on these boards that 20B is much harder… why?

Is 4C absolutely required before the 20 series can be taken?

it’s not necessarily harder. in fact, if you got a 5 on the AB exam, 20B will be a snorefest for you.

you need to have passed precalculus in some form before calculus … duh. whether you take it in high school or at ucsd is up to you.
