Hey all! I'm having a hard time deciding between Math 104 and 114. I got a 5 on AP Calc, but it was AB not BC. And if It helps, I got a 770 Math II. Does anyone know the differences between these two classes? And during NSO, is there a placement test that would put me in the right class?

However, if you have taken the internal exam and tested out of Math 104, then you can take 114. I’m not sure when this placement test occurs, but I assume during NSO.

Only a 5 on Calc BC gets you credit for Math 104.

If you only took Calc AB, you should take Math 104. Math 114 is the class after 104 and covers multivariable and some vector calculus along with a review of differential equations. Math 104 reviews the basics, derivatives etc then goes on to stuff like parametric and polar coordinates then sequences and series. It is like the BC part of Calculus (the part not covered in AB).

I wouldn’t know this myself, but I’ve heard from people that MATH 114 has a much better curve and is less stressful than MATH 104. I’ve also heard that if you learn the MATH 104 material on your own, you should just go to MATH 114. You don’t even have to take a placement test, apparently, and you’ll gain retroactive credit for MATH 104 after taking MATH 114.

Yes, you may want to consider skipping 104 if you can sufficiently teach yourself the material, that’s pretty much what you would be doing anyway. Math 104 is terribly taught, Math 114 is not any better in that respect but is less stressful.
