math 104?

i am a transfer student who will study math and econ up at cal. i am currently signed up for math 104 and 110 for this fall semester. i will more likely to drop one of them. i am curious if i will have much difficulty with taking math 104. i really want to take math 104 this fall so i can study measure theory in math 105 the spring semester. i am from a small liberal arts college. i have taken one course in proof writing.

It’s hard to tell. Look through the textbook, see how tough the material looks. And don’t forget that the drop deadline is far away. You could probably take the first midterm and decide whether to stick with Math 104 based on that.

thank you christopher. but do you think that taking math 110 and then math 104 is probably the better route as many people do?

It’s recommended, but I’ve seen plenty of people go with 104 as their first upper div and survive.

UpMagic, your, mathbody’s, and jetforec’s posts i have been waiting for. could you say if i can do both at the same time? right now my schedule looks like:
math 110
math 104
stat 134
econ 101a
would you say this is doable?

bump bump

ull die dude. iv taken the latter 2 classes alrdy. its not exactly the load u want coming outta community college

I have taken every single one of those classes. The average student would not be able to handle all of them in one semester. A brilliant student would be able to. What do you know about yourself?

dunleavy, i am not from a CC. I am from a private college.
Christopher, What if I drop math 110. Will it be a moderately doable schedule?

my first semester i took math 110, stat 134, and econ 101a. My second semester i took math 113, math 104, econ 136, and econ 100b. My GPA in my second semester was much higher and i got A’s in both math 104 and math 113. This was mainly because it took me some time to get used to how upper division math courses work. I suggest you taking it slow in your first semester to make sure you don’t screw up and end up getting rejected from the econ major.

I would recommend starting with 110 before 104. I think its much easier to bridge the gap between lower division linear algebra and upper division algebra than it is to start with analysis. Also, a lot of people seem to underestimate stat 134. I thought it was really easy and got an A on the first midterm but the 2nd half the course was much more difficult.

Santacanyon - usually the level of familiarity with communicating math assumed in 104 will be greater. That’s the main variable.

Perhaps try 3 of those classes instead of 4, because all of them together promises to be uncomfortable, and probably won’t buy you much.

thank you all of you. i will seriously consider dropping math 104 this fall.

jetforce, you have done pretty much what i plan to do. could you share your experience/tip on math 110, econ 101a, and stat 134?
mathboy, are you taking math 202 this semester?
