So I need to decide what math to take. I am currently in the LSA Honors Program. I have the option to take Math 115 with Jill Halpern, which I heard is a great class but A REALLY REALLY HARD grading curve. I also have the option to take Math 185- Honors Calc 1. This course is graded on a more lenient curve but I hear that it is very hard material with very strict professors. I am mediocre Math student in high school and like a good challenge. What class should i take?

The honors math at U-M can be very theorhetical. There are two series - My recollection is the first thing you do in the higher series (used to be called 195 but I think the numbering changed) was to define a number line.

I would recommend honors math only if you are really interested in it.

Math 115 has a really hard grading curve.

Which class would look better if i wanted to apply to the ross business school?

bump!!!

if you’re worried about struggling with regular calc 1, DO NOT take an honors version.

edit: i’d assume for ross about 90% of students just take regular calc 1 or waive out of it via AP credit

115

Derivatives are a piece of cake compared to calc 2 integrals. 185 is the type of intro proof class a hardcore math major would enjoy. 115 is straightforward rote problem solving. Just casually study like 5 minutes a day over the summer, hit it hard during the semester, and you’ll crush the curve and get into Ross. Two things about UM: 1) You’ll be amazed at how many people are smarter than you; 2) You’ll be amazed at how many people are dumber than you.

185 is harder but the average grade is a B+ (opposed to about a B- in 115) and it will be more impressive to Ross if that’s your ambition. I would recommend trying it. I think for any of the basic math classes you should be able to do it if you’re willing to try hard.
