Is this course hard if you didn't take Calculus in high school?

It shouldn't be. I'm taking it right now and so far we're just reviewing Pre-Calc stuff.

I'm sure it'll get harder though.

LSA students, especially pre-meds, are the ones who complain about math courses. Engineers tend to have an easier time, no doubt an experience from likely having better math backgrounds.

I'm an Econ major. :)

The material is of course pretty basic stuff, but the tests can be pretty damn tricky. However, the curves are good. I believe they are all curved to a B- or something, so it's not difficult to get a B. Getting an A requires a good amount of work. It's a big weeder for the b school I guess.

Most people don't realize that it is completely test-centric. What you do in class has little to no effect on your final grade.

Thanks for all the replies, and CCRuner are you saying that the material is basic even without taking Calc in high school? Cause that is what I am mostly concerned with right now. Also does not getting an A in math 115 basically take you out of the running for a spot in B school?

Eh, I've met a lot of students in South Quad that are B-School students, and their GPAs are no means perfect.

Futbil

I would say that people who took Calc in high school didn't really seem to have an advantage in 115. Mainly, it has to do with the complete difference in teaching at Mich compared to your high school. For example, in high school, we learned to just take derivatives of expressions, but at Michigan they really stress the understanding of what a derivative is. And you will never find simple, one-concept problems on the test, all of it will be huge word problems with tons of steps.

But, if you just understand and know how to do every problem assigned (web hw/team hw) you will get an A.

And, I know people who got B+'s in calc that still got into the B school. I'd say Econ is probably more important, but I really have no idea since I'm not studying business.

Thx CCRunner!

Ok I hate Math 115. My teacher is wayyyy too picky when grading quizzes.
