math 116 vs math 114

it seems as though all the math 114 teachers are lackluster in their quality ranking according to penn course review and i was wondering is it wise to pursue math 116, with a great professor (harbater), even though it will definitely be harder?

i have only a 5 on the calc BC test and i dont plan to go any further math wise past math 116. i will be taking more stat courses though (im in wharton).

can any current penn students comment on how this tough this course is compared to math 114, and whether this change is worth it. thanks a lot

if you’re not going to take any math past 114 than im guessing youre not a big math person? while your 5 on AP Calc BC clearly indicates you have some talent you really need to love it and be willing to work very hard if you’re going to do alot of math in college.

that said i’d recommend math 115 if you really don’t want to take math 114. math 115 is meant for people who need the math but do not plan on taking anything past that level. it is also suppose to be a bit easier than math 114. if you do not want to take 115 i would suggest sticking with 114 instead of going ahead to 116. i have a couple engineering and vagelos friends who took 116 and said it was very difficult.

Uh…don’t take 116 unless you have too much time on your hands

You can consider 115 if prerequisites are not a problem for your stat classes, but I would just take 114

can math 115 count for the prereq for a stat concentration? does anyone know?

Math116 is going to be completely different than 114. Take it if you really are interested in the foundations of calculus (where does it come from, how does it work, how to actually prove that the theorems are true), rather than applications. Harbater is a great professor. Visit his web site for more info on the course, including problem sets, and decide from there. Be willing to work hard if you take 116.

i wanted to take 116 but both recitations were the same time as my management class :frowning: oh well
