I've heard this class is quite challenging among the slew of U of M math courses. Any advice or thoughts?

My son is taking it too. Hoping it’s not overwhelming for him!

Yes many say that Calculus II is harder than both Calc and Calc III. I took it at a community college and found it challenging. There is no substitute for doing your homework and going to class will help. Also, it is ESSENTIAL that you take good notes. For example, a big part of Calc II is learning about series and sequences (in integral form), and you have to be very organized to keep everything together.

Good luck to you!

Although the exam averages are often in the 40s and 50s, it’s not too hard to get a good grade. Theres a massive curve and they put like 40 practice exams online to study from. Just do a lot of practice problems and you’ll have no problem with the course.

Thought I’d give an update… there were SO MANY posts this summer about which math to take, using AP credit, etc. MY son DID use his Calculus AB credit to get out of Math 115 and started this fall in 116 - calc 2. He has not missed class at all and does have a study group that meets twice a week. He just texted me that he got a B+ on the mid-term. He’s pretty happy, since he said he had no time to do any practice exams or do any significant studying on his own due to other projects due this week. (Poor time management, I suspect…) Considering that, we’re pretty relieved. Seems it was the right math starting point for him.

how did he know he got a B+?
what was the average and what was his score? The average is a B-, so if your son got a 60 when the avg is 40, that’s probably about an A. Just saying…

He said the class average was 65% and he got 75%, which he said was a B+ (for that exam, at least).
