Math 126 w/ Prof Stamm

Prof Stamm will be teaching Math 126 in the Fall and he appears to be a relatively new Prof since there aren't any reviews for him on RatemyProf or NinjaCourses. He taught Math 105/185 last Fall and is teaching Math H53 this sem. Has anyone who has taken a class with him care to comment on his teaching/grading etc?

I was hoping Prof Evans would be teaching it again this Fall since I had him for Math53 and he was great. But Math 126 seems to be offered only in the fall and I intend to graduate by next year so I'm not gonna wait for another year.

For people who have taken Math 126 before, how hard is it? The prereqs are Math53 and 54 only, so does that mean the class isn't too proof-based? I'm taking Math 110 this sem w/o having taken Math 55 and I feel like I haven't really learned how to proof stuff at all. I did horrible on the midterm but am doing pretty well on the homework so I'm not sure how that's gonna work out.

i took 126 with evans and the proofs aren’t really rigorous since 104 isn’t a prereq. You just need to know the material from math 53 and the material on fourier series from 54 really well. In the end, it was probably one of the easiest upper div math classes i’ve taken. It should be along the lines of 110 in difficulty. Also, evans is teaching math 170 if you do want to take a class with him.

I would agree that it’s not the hardest upper division math course. If you had a grasp on Math 53, then you should be fine.

Has anyone taken math 126 with Stamm? How would someone rate it in terms of hw difficulty and how do the exams compare to the hw?

I toke it with Stamm. He’s a great teacher and grades leniently. The difficulty is ok and as long as you are comfortable with 104 you will be fine. This course emphases a lot of physics point of view and modelling.
The homework is difficult at the beginning but you will get used to it. Expect to spend at least 5 hrs a week on it.
The exams were of comparable difficulty to hw. Actually some were from hw and some from textbook. Certainly a lot of proofs but routine stuff. You will have a cheat sheet so don’t need to worry about it. Actually there are only a few types of pdes we know how to solve so you only need to know them.
The course workload is not heavy at all and you will learn a lot from it. btw, many a+ and a for this class.

Can you please email me themidterm for math 126 you took? My email address is mary.jensen5 at yahoo.com

Thanks so much!

would u call it an ‘easy a’ class?

Sorry that I threw the 2 midterm papers away. But as I said, they were usually copies of homework and easy proofs from textbook. The averages were above 8 out of 10 and indeed many people got perfect score during the second midterm.

I would definitely say it’s an ‘easy a’ class. Although many people performed very well in the exam, the grades were not given based on curve. FYI, 45% people got a+/a.

@Temp12345: Thanks for letting me know.

Do you have some hw solns you can send me or any hw’s you can please email me? Thx
