I'm taking Math 128A next semester with Prof Strain and the course description mentions programming and practicing on the computer. I was wondering what kind of programming knowledge is needed for this course?

The prereqs are just Math 53and54 and none of those classes involve programming. I have zero programming experience and I have never used Matlab or any other mathematical software.

The emphasis of the course is to use computers to solve math problems. You don’t really need to know the same sorts of abstract programming things that CS majors do. The actual programming in these sorts of classes is straightforward as long as you understand the underlying math involved.

Thanks for the reply, that’s good to know! I haven’t taken Math 55 so I’m not familiar with formulating proofs at all, does Math 128a require knowledge of proof techniques?
