Math 152 - curve?

I'm an incoming freshman and will probably be enrolling in Math 152 this fall at A&M. I took Calc BC in high school, but didn't score high enough to get credit for it. So I've been reviewing it this summer, by taking past tests for the class that are posted online. Those exams are BRUTAL. I feel fairly comfortable with the material, but I'm getting a lot of 50% and 60% raw scores on the tests. With the tests and final worth such a huge part of your grade, I don't see how many people could pass the class with an A or a B.

So Math 152 veterans, is there a curve on tests or in the class? If so, how steep is it?

My older daughter is a ME student and I have a freshman in general engineering this fall. Math 152 did NOT curve the scores when my older daughter took the class. She said she had the “best” teacher, in the fact, she taught well and prepared them for future courses but there was no curve. She had other first year classes with no curve as well. It was a rigorous path but, now, she believes it was definitely worth it.

28% received an A in Math 152 and 31% received a B in the fall of 2013.

Whether you receive a curve or not depends entirely on your professor. Don’t count on it though, since Math 152 has common exams.

She also found a good percentage of the kids were in the class for the second time, especially fall, which skews the statistics. Interesting fact for that class and, I believe, she said thermo.

Its a fairly rigorous program but worth it – the Career Center was awesome.

I’ve never seen the grade breakdown for either Math 152 or Dwight Look as a whole before, thanks for posting those. Calc 2 looks doable, but that grade distribution is rough. but I have a bunch of scholarships that depend on me keeping a 3.5 GPA, which means I’ll have to stay in the top quartile of my class. To be honest, I don’t think my chances of doing that for four years are very good. There are a lot of sharp kids at A&M.

Don’t worry bro, you’ll be fine. Math 152 isn’t as hard as people make it out to be. It’s just most people take it as freshman and still have the high school mentality of breezing through STEM classes without putting in a lot of effort.

As for your GPA, as a fellow EE I’d say not to sweat too much about that either. I’m going into my third year and have a 3.8 GPA. Made an A in MATH 151, 152, and 251. Made a B in MATH 308. Made an A in PHYS 218, 208, and 222. Made a B in PHYS 221. For comparison, I only made a 590 on the math section of the SAT and a 27 on the math section of the ACT.

All you gotta do is study and stay on top of your game. Make your first two years count and a 3.5 GPA for four years is very doable.

Nice job with your grades, man. That gives me some confidence going into the class this fall.

@izelkay same buddy! u did really well… hope things turn out the same way for the rest of us :)

Thanks for asking this question! Im taking Math 152 as well and have been nervous about it. My biggest concern is that I didnt take BC(Schedule wouldn’t work). I got a 5 on the AB test and a 34 on my Math ACT and 800 on SAT. Ive been trying to review the videos Professor Kahlig has online. I’m just concerned I might screw up Freshman year. Do you think it can be done without taking BC in High School?

Yup I made a 4 on the AB test. Didn’t take BC and still made an A in 152.
