hey, for pre-med, i dont think we need to take hard math courses like 1a or 1b or 53 etc...so will 16 series suffice? med shools won't dislike it will they?
but anyways, how hard is the 16 series? what kind of stuff is it? is the curving hard?
i have a 5 in calc bc and ab

what about 53? do med schools care which math you take? 53, 1, or 16?
i am elligible for 53 but see no point in taking it as i am a public health intended major
but if med schools like to see higher math then i can take 53...
what do you suggest?

you don't need 53 for med. 53 is the third semester of calculus. Given your 5 in BC, you are qualified for Math 53 regardless if you take Math 1A-B or 16A-B

No, you can take either of the three. But the curves are brutal in general, and the material is also very difficult. Med schools would rather see an A in 16A/B than a B in 1A/B or 53A/B.

That said, if you're a student who performs best in classes where you are challenged by the material, you should not hesitate to take the more challenging class. The 5 in BC suggests you are a strong math student - ask yourself how comfortable you are with AP Calc BC.

interesting thing my friend asked me...
because i have a 5 on bc and ab, its not like Cal wont give me credit for taking 16a and 16b right?
they cant force me to take more rigorous courses?
i mean, im majoring in public health and since both the major and med schools only need the 16 series for math, i can take that if i want without any problem right?

i was reading the lower division requirements for mcb and it listed math 1a and 1b, not including 16a and 16b. does that mean if i take 16 a/b, i won't be able to formally declare myself as mcb major?

It doesnt matter. 16 is easier but only 3 units. 1A is a lil harder and 1B is a lot harder than the 16 series but they are 4 units. Med schools don't care which series you take as long as you take a year of calculus.

However, certain majors require that you take 1 series rather than the 16 series. To declare MCB they say you need to take 1 series but they'll let you off if you talk to the advisers. For some other majors, you have to take the 1 series (check the department website). Another reason you might want to take 1 series is if you want to further your education in math by going on to Math 53,54,etc.

im #48 on the waiting list for math 16a (due to dis unavailability), they still haven't opened up other discussions yet....do you guys think i will get in?
