Math 16A/1A, Chem 1A?

I've only taken Calculus AB at high school, got A's/B's in the class but I KNOW I didn't do so hot on the AP Exam. I'm taking Chem 1A, as that is a MUST for me (pre-med), and I'm really worried because I took HP Chem in junior year, and my school sucks ass. I know I'll go to loads of tutoring for Chem, so I'm worried about taking Math 1A. Will med school's look down on me for taking Math 16a?

Med schools can’t tell the difference between 16A or 1A. Unless your major requires it go with 16A.

hey aphrodite99
im kinda in the same situation taking chem 1a and math 16a what other classes are you taking i need an easy one and which chem prof are you taking

Hey guys i just signed up for the math 16 series even though I am a MCB intended student. How do i go about the process to waive the MCB math 1 series requirement? I have the necessary 5 in calc bc and i took calc c/d at a community college. So what do I actually have to do to waive the requirement or to make sure that it’s okay?

Thanks.

Well for Neurobiology and another concentration (maybe CDB) you can take the Math 16 series.

wait, can someone confirm what Calbear said? Is it true you can take Math 16A/B for MCB - neurobiology track? I was thinking if you took 16A/B instead of 1A/1B, you have no chance with MCB… so I turned to IB instead… but yeah someone let me know… I do love neuro, so that wouldn’t be such a bad fit.

^^ I don’t really have a credible source since I remember that fact from a post some time ago about somebody who wanted to take 16 and be MCB and than somebody said for certain concentrations you can take the 16 series and neurobiology was one of them. I asked my friend who is in neuro about this rumor and she said that she had also heard about but also couldn’t confirm it (she took the 1 series to keep her options open). Best bet is to ask the department.

MCBHopeful, since you received a 5 on the AP Calc BC Exam, I think you can skip out of Math 1A/1B. It says so on the MCB website. Therefore, I don’t think it will be a problem if you take the 16 series (although it won’t really be counted in the major GPA but don’t think it really matters). If your AP scores are sent to Berkeley and you can see it on myberkeleyapp, then that means it’s been processed. I think MCB majors can take the 16 series as long as they have the AP score or community college credit to waive out of the 1 series. Can somebody confirm this?

And I’m not really sure how the math classes with specific concentrations work… Probably it’s a lot easier if you contact the department advisor.

^I think if you have the credit to waive the 1 Series then it is waived for the major, but you can take the 16 if you’re premed and cover the 1 year of calc requirement while still doing MCB

Yep, so it probably might be a better idea to take it easier with the 16 series.

So, I’ve decided to not go MCB. I’ll do either Public Health, IB, or Psych, is 16a still my best option? :P. And to let people know how well my math skills are, let me just say that I got a 2 on AP Calculus AB -_-;…

If you are doing psych, you will need to take a stats (2, 20, or 21) or math (54 or 55) in addition to whatever math you need to take for med school. But for any of these majors, you should be fine with taking the 16 series. You should check the department websites if you need any clarification.

^If you have to take 54/55 for Psych, then you will want to take 1A. 16A is the terminal series and doesn’t prepare you to continue on in math as well as 1A does

What math will I have to take for Poli Sci? Stats, I’m assuming, but what’s the easiest Stats class I can take? If it makes any difference, I got a 2 on the Calc AB test as well.

I don’t think there is a math requirement for Poli Sci. The website says, “The Political Science major is comprised of three lower-division requirements and eight upper-division political science courses, as well as a history course, for a total of 12 courses.”

As for psych, I think it might be better if you take stats 2, 20, or 21 since you will need to take the 1 series for math 54/55 as masterhammy said. Stats 2 is considered the most basic stats class but I heard that the curve is somewhat brutal… but it might be the best choice since you don’t feel confident with your math skills.

Alright, how about this. I got a 5 on the AP Calc AB. I’m signed up for Math 16A right now, but I’m worried that it is going to be remedial. I have decided not to take Chem 1A until the spring, so that would pretty much be my hardest course. Should I take Math 1A instead to keep interest in the course? I heard (from a MCB Counselor during orientation) that people slack off in Math 16A and actually do worse on the easier material than Math 1A.

That’s actually the reason why I took Math 1A actually…because I knew that either:

1) a portion of the class would be slackers and would influence me to work less hard in the 16A course
2) I’d have that whole psychological thing where I’d convince myself 16A is remedial and fail the course cuz I “thought” it was easy

I also got a 5 on the AB Calc exam last year. I’m pretty sure i would have gotten a 5 on the BC exam this year (everyone in my class did this year) except special circumstances kept me from taking it.

Alright, good bye psych major LOL. I am so going to die in chem 1a, but thanks for the advice everyone.

hmm giving up on psych just becaue of one reason? I took stats over summer in a CC, and it turned to be really easy, so I’m done with my math req’s pretty much. I also took 16A/16B in berkeley but that was because of premed prereq’s.
Anyway, major in something that interests you, not for the easiest path available…

Okay so this source is highly debatable and maybe out dated, but this is where I found about Neuro and CDB being allowed to take 16 series of math. Take it however you may.
