I heard that both are horrible at teaching and the exams are way over what they teach in class T.T...
But I guess these two are the only ones available for 16A this fall..
Out of the two, who would you recommend??

I am even thinking about taking 1A just cuz ppl say Harrison and Borcherds are pretty easy..

yeah…i heard both suck too…but i ended picking up scanlon. i’m also interested in what others selected!

you should take math 1A. its so much easier. dont take math 16a!

what? On what planet is Math 1A easier than Math 16A?

yeah I’d also like to know why you think math1a is easier than 16a. Not trying to argue or anything; just seemed unusual considering how everyone said 16a is easier in other posts…

a lot of people i talked to that have taken math 16a say that the teachers don’t teach really well and that the finals are impossible. i’ve also talked to many people who were in math 1A and it seems like the teachers are better and though it goes more in depth with calc, at least u are more prepared for the final and you will overall do better in the class. personally, i was going to take math 16a but i talked to a lot of people who were in my same situation and it really seems like math 1a is a better fit if you don’t want to take a hard math class and you want to do well in the class =)

I’m interested in this question as well. Should I wait to take Math 16A in the spring?

It really all depends on the professor. 16A is generally easier than 1A. Last fall, the 1A professors were tough, so a lot of people struggled and ended up not doing so well.

i’m a prospective freshman deciding on math 16a or math1a also (going on pre-med track) and i took AP Calc BC (As in the class but 1 on the ap test ). i’ve been told that math 1a is harder than 16a but i just checked pick-a-prof website and math 1a gives out more As! and I heard that Borcheards was a good teacher (easy to comprehend materials as compared to Scanton who teaches math 16a).
so in the end i’m deciding to take math1a instead of math16a

also i have a question on the discussion. would you recommend taking a discussion class right after the lecture or perhaps a day after/before the lecture (lec = tuesday and thursday so discussion would be monday and wednesday or discussion right after the lecture?)

Wow wth what world do you live in?!?! Math 1a is RIDICULOUSLY hard compared to math 16a. I have NO previous calculus experience prior coming to Cal and took math1a. I’m doing horrible. My roommate has Gu and her exams do not even compare to how hard mine were. She has problems on her test that are such basic differentiation problems. I’m even in FPF and 16a tests are SOOO easy compared to 1as. I cannot believe there are people advising that if you want to take an easy class take 1a. I had no prior calc class and math 1a is probably the hardest class ive EVER taken in my LIFE.

Many had tried to give similar advice but the poster was convinced that 1A was easier. That was back in June, if you look at the posting date. No further posts from that person, no idea if they took 1A or have even started at Cal yet.

Some times 16A is harder than 1B!
Difficulty:
Woodin (teaches 16A and fails 20% of his class and is redic!) >>>> Borchards (more than 60% As I heard, lets you use cheat sheets and on tests just changes the numbers)

Rider I know the date they posted. I was talking to Juuliawho. Saying 16a is easier then 1a is just bad advice. It depends on previous calc experience what teachers are teaching that semester. Not just on “what you heard”.

Math 16A gives 31% A’s and 31% B’s.
Math 16B gives 45% A’s and 32% B’s.

Math 1A gives 35% A’s and 34% B’s.
Math 1B gives 27% A’s and 38% B’s.

Also, Math 16 material is supposedly just easier than Calculus…
