Math 170A

I will take Math 170A with Lincoln Chayes for this Winter quarter. He has horrible review on bruinwalk but mainly from lower division math class. So can anyone here has taken Math 170A with him give me some opinions?

Also, is it do able if I taken 4 math classes (1 lower division and 3 upper division) at the same time?

I remember reading his reviews on Bruinwalk too. I would definitely avoid him at all costs, but since you’re a math major it might be inevitable you’ll be stuck in a class with him.

Generally, the class taught doesn’t really matter. *ty professors are *ty professors.

There’s a big difference between upper div and lower div math classes though. I had him for a lower div, and he taught it like it was an upper div (as in lecture style). That probably didn’t help his reviews from non-math majors. I would still try to avoid him though, if possible.

Thanks for the responds. But I dont have much of a choice atm (should have change major sooner…).

@thiscouldbeheavn: is he helpful during his office hour? and do you remember his grading policy (homework, midterm, curve etc.)?

I never went to office hours. The homework grading was tough, but that may have just been the grader, and the homework itself was pretty tough. The midterms were relatively easy, though there were a lot of low scores. I never got my grade on the final, so it’s hard to say how that went. It’s hard to know exactly how it was curved, but unless a lot of those low midterm scores dropped the class, I don’t think too many people received an A.

He’s not that bad. I wouldn’t worry too much if you have to be in his class. He’s definitely eccentric, which probably doesn’t help win over bruinwalk reviewers, but he can be pretty funny at times. As the reviews say, his lectures mostly go over proofs, but that’s going to be pretty typical in upper div math classes.
