Math 185 vs. 295

Hello! I am attending UMich next year, but I am having difficulty deciding between Honors Calc I or Honors Math I.

About me: My school offers Calc AB, Calc BC, Calculus III, and Differential Equations, all of which I have taken. Most use the exact same textbooks that the Honors Calc sequence uses at UofM. I taught myself BC and III the summer before Senior year. I am almost done teaching myself Linear Algebra. I also scored a 36 on ACT math and have been honored for my math skills.

I love learning math, but I have heard that the Honors Math sequence requires an upwards of 20 hours a week for problem sets. While I would love to have so much knowledge, this seems like a huge commitment for a Freshman. However I looked over the Honors Calc classes and I already have most of that material down.

I am pursuing a degree in Financial Mathematics. I have no plans of getting a Masters of PhD in math. Is it even worth it for me, then, in this case to pursue the Honors Math sequence?

Thanks so much!

Don’t take calc 1/2 again. I’d recommend starting out in 295 and dropping down to 285 if you think 295 is too much work. I was in a similar situation to you (having done lin alg in HS), and in retrospect I wish I had done the honors sequence (I started off with 215 at UM). Feel free to PM me if you have any specific questions.
