Here's the deal: I am taking a Calc III class this year that covers the first 2/3 of the topics that Math 192 covers, and I know during orientation week an exam is offered for students that wish to try to test out of Math 192. My question: does anyone know how hard this placement test is? Comparable to the prelims that are posted on the Math 192 site?

I was thinking I'd order a used textbook used in that class and go over all the stuff my current class has covered plus the stuff we haven't since it seems most people recommend testing out of that class if possible. Does this sound like a good idea?

Two friends of mine took the placement test and passed. I think that it was similar to the prelims, but it covered all of the topics, not just a hunk like the prelims do. I have heard that it isn't difficult to pass, I think you need a 70% or something.

where can you get more info on these tests kinda stuff to opt out of classes?
I took an EPGY course, and if I can I'd like to test out of multivariable calc, or w/e I can (that is, if i get in cornell first).
Thanks!

1/3 of the course is a lot. I personally recommend taking the course for two reasons; you will reinforce the material you already know and you will learn the new material within the structure and format of a course. However, if you are diligent, studious, and motivated enough to self-study and learn that new material well over the summer, then you should consider an attempt at passing the placement test.

Also, a prelim is just another word for an exam. It is short for "preliminary exam". Preliminary for what, I'm not exactly sure. I guess the final?

I know someone who learned the material in a weekend. As long as there is nothing critical that you will need to know for your major than take it. I know for Eng. Physics, however, you need to know the material well but it is covered again in another math class.
