Math 1A/1B Book

CALCULUS (CUSTOM 1A/1B)
Author: STEWART Edition: 5TH

Used $41.00
New $54.50

What's so "custom" about it? Is it just half of the book since I'm going into 1B?

I'm thinking about just buying my books through Amazon since the prices for a new book are cheaper than the prices of used books on bkstr.com.

However, the price for this book on Amazon about 3-4 times the price and there are 2 versions.
Calculus for $153

Calculus Single Variable for $123

The first has 400 more pages and it looks like there is an extra softcover book.

Anyone have any ideas?

how do you know which texts you need for the classes?

You can find out on Neds or from the Student Bookstore.

BearFacts and Telebears links to bkstr with the books you need.

nedsbooks.com

efollett.com

i recommend checking those lists and then going to nedsbooks.com

early transcendentals is a great book that covers calc 1-3 (1a, 1b, 53... derivatives, integrals, multi-variable) and gives a good intro on how to solve differential equations. however, not everybody takes all three classes. calpirg published a huge report on the cost of textbooks and different organizations have put a lot of pressure on the publishers to get rid of the extras (random online stuff nobody every looks at, cd's, etc). the custom, softcover editions is in response to all of that complaining. they have only the chapters that you will use for that class and nothing else. if you plan on taking the 4 core undergrad math classes, just get the regular hardcover edition. if you're only taking 1a or 1b, get the softcover unless you want a good reference book to keep.

I see hte difference now, bkstr listed it as just Calculus and Nedsbooks lists it as Early Transcendentals

If you're lazy you can go to:

Bearfacts --> Registration (Class Schedule) --> Purchase Books

They will show you what books you need for your classes and also allow you to purchase them online (so you can either have it shipped to you, or pick it up in person in a handy box with everything in it at the student store on campus). Hope this helps, good luck all!

err, sorry... in my previous post, it should be, "i recommend going to... comegetused.com"

Good luck in Math 1B. It has the highest flunk-rate out of all the classes at Berkeley.

I'm not saying this to freak you out. It's true.

Most people who take 1B have already taken AP Calculus BC too (and usually passed with scores of 4) . So, it's not going to be easy.

highest flunk out rate eh? that doesn't sound very good lol. hopefully BC will prepare me a LITTLE bit for 1B.

Which of the two books (ISBN) bellow will get me through Math 53 and 54. I don't mind having a review of 1B too:

0534393217
053439339X

I work at Barnes & Noble and because of my employee discount I want to get it through them. So I don't really want to get the custom version online. Thanks in advance.

^^^
how about:

0534417787 -- Multivariable Calculus: Early Transcendentals
or
0534393578 -- Multivariable Calculus

Another book with a discrepancy:

STRUCTURE & INTERPRETATION OF COMPUTER PROGRAMS
Author: ABELSON G Edition: 2ND
$111.50 New from Bkstr and Ned's
$68.78 from Amazon

What's the difference between "Early Transcendentals" and the normal "Calculus"?

@KupMup: Get Early Transcendentals.

@ others: I don't think Math 1B was that bad. I did get only an A-, but I really blame that on lack of studying and (definitely) lack of making all of my 8:00am Th discussions where I had a quiz. >.<
