Math 1A/1B

My S is in AP Calculus AB, and is in the FPF program, so which of these math programs, if any should he take, his intended major is Molecular Biology.

thanks

Is he gonna get a 5 on the Calc AB exam?

He has been getting As in all his math but nothing is guaranteed, so the answer would be no

Molecular Biology… there are three ‘molecular’ biology majors, Molecular & Cell Biology, Molecular Environmental Biology, and Microbial Biology. Do you know which one specifically he is interested in? Furthermore, is he premed?

Not pre-med, and Molecular and Cell Biology

thanks

Well…There are two ways to quantify his readiness for Math 1B. A 5 on the AP Calc AB class and As in all math classes is good, but it doesn’t necessarily mean your son is ready for Math 1B. Math at Berkeley is definitely more conceptual than it is at most high schools. He can do what I did for my first semester. I signed up for a Math 1B class, but after attending it for a week decided that I felt not prepared enough and dropped Math 1B for Math 1A.

Math 1B is a hard class, I would advise that he take Math 1A anyways so that he could ease into Math 1B in Spring.

Yeah, but Math 1A can be quite difficult too. It largely depends on the instructor.

^ I concur.

5 on AP test doesn’t necessarily guarantee an A. nor a B.

Take math 1A…
