I'm probably going to be on the waitlist for an English R1A course at a specific time and on the waitlist for a Math 1A discussion section for a preferred time. The English course (17 students) currently has 2 people on the waitlist, while the Math discussion section (25 students) currently has 1 person on the waitlist. So I'll be 3rd and 2nd, respectively. What are my chances of getting off the waitlist for these two popular classes?

My schedule works out quite nicely if I can clear the waitlists. If only I had registered earlier. But the waitlist and hoping is the best I can do right now. Any help is appreciated.

You have a better shot at math. People rarely get off the waitlist for english classes, but you never know. So far I've known like 4 or 5 ppl who were waitlisted for english and none got in. Some ppl tell me not to even bother adding an english r1a class if you are gonna be on the waitlist, but its still possible.

You are going to want to find some R&C courses at the same time as the one you want to take due to the fact most people will not drop R&C courses.

Since I was bored and had lots of time to spend I did the work for you.
I searched for R&C courses at the same time as all the English R1A courses with 2 person waitlists that were open.

Here they are:

South Asian R5A 84009

TuTh 2-330P

None

as long as you can get on the waitlist for a math class, you shouldn't have any trouble getting into a discussion. they have a whole process of filling out an availability sheet so they can place you in a section that works for you. the math department is very good at this.

with r&c courses and their waitlists, like they've said, it's hit or miss. the spot number doesn't really matter as much since the instructor usually decides who gets in based on seniority or other factors. but if you want that class, make sure you attend for the first week.

My R1a professor took roll at the end of the first two class lectures and if a student didn't show up either time he was dropped. So... go to the first class and you'll have a better chance at getting in. For math some GSI's will make excetions and will probably let an extra 1 or 2 people in their section if you can't make any other time. You've got a good chance at both.
