The thought came up to me while I was busy trying to figure out whether I should change my discussion time because one of the days conflicted with a PE class... What value does the math 1a discussion (hald), and discussions in general provide? Is it okay if we are late to the class, or if we leave early?

You don't even have to go at all to Math discussions. A lot of people skip math discussions. They can be useful though, considering a lot of math lectures are useless. A lot of the GSI's are very good and you can learn a lot in the small discussion setting. But yea, you can come and go whenever you want.. They won't take attendance. But people are going to see you if you leave early, because it's a smaller classroom with less people, so it'd be nice to tell the GSI you gotta leave early because of a conflict. O yea.. almost forgot... for most math classes, you have to take a quiz and turn in homework once a week in discussions.

oh ic. I guess Ill have to reschedule my math discussion to late afternoon/evening... :(

The only reason you have to go is the homework and quiz. Other days, you don't have to go and it doesn't matter if you show up early, late, or not at all, but most people show up anyway because of 1. courtesy and 2. it helps, especially if your professor is terrible at explaining calculus.

hey vicissitudes, do you know anything about the phycology and physics for future presdients discussions? are all discussions about the same or different by subject?
