If you're not definitely sure you'll get a 5, you should take math 1a so you can have a better foundation, besides if it turns out easy then it'll just be a gpa booster.

Math 1B is supposed to be more difficult but you don't really use material from Math 1A- from what I remember, we only did integrals, series, random topics (complex numbers) and second order differential equations. All you really need to be able to do is integrals from AB such as substitution.

Math 1A was a bit more difficult for me because we covered some things that AB did not (hyperbolic functions, delta-epsilon proofs) and went more in depth in proofs.

However, difficulty in class depends on the professor mostly.

The proofs are slightly different. My friend's professor required them to know the proof of the Taylor series which is difficult (math 1b) but mine did not. My math 1a professor required us to do induction and delta-epsilon proofs which i found difficult. It is really up to you on how well you know your math and how the professors are. Math 1B is generally considered more difficult and they usually do not recommend you to skip 1A if you did not do well or feel confident about your calculus in high school.

Actually, I had Bs most of the year until we started reviewing for the AP test. During the review sessions, I had one of the highest grades in the class because I did well on the mock AP tests I took in class.
