Hello,

I am currently a freshman in Cal planning to major in Math. I took Math 1A first semester. Next semester, I will enroll in Math 1B. However, I have a lot of free space in my schedule and wish to enroll in another math class.

Would it be alright to enroll in Math 54 as well?

I know Math 1B pretty well, as I got a 5 on the AP test. I have an A+ in Math 1A. I am also planning on refreshing my knowledge of Math 1B and self-studying Math 54 over winter break.

Will Math 54 require a lot of Math 53 (which I will be unable to take)? Or will this be (semi) logical?

Thank You

Math 54 does not depend on Math 53. However, the last part of Math 1B introduces differential equations that will be needed in the last part of Math 54. This is not usually included in high school AP courses, so you would have to self-study it if you take Math 54 without having previously completed Math 1B. See the following:

If you wish to take an additional math course, Math 55 would not be strictly dependent on Math 1B material:

You may also want to consider other courses in subjects where math is commonly applied, such as computer science, economics, physics, or statistics.

Why did you take Math 1A after a 5 on the AP test? Did you try the old Math 1A final exams and find your calculus knowledge shaky?
